linchpin, fringe time など

ワールドカップの熱戦は、サッカーに人並みの興味しかない私が見ても面白いが、書店にあった Newsweek 誌 の最近号を眺めていたら、 linchpin という単語がサッカーに使われている例が目に飛び込んできた。

アメリカ代表チームについての記事で、帰宅してからネットで改めて確かめたその部分は、

- He (＝チームの中心選手 Donovan) returns to Germany as the offensive linchpin and a marked man.

まさに日本語でいう「攻撃のかなめ」という感じである。また、そうした選手はドノヴァンだけなので the、マークされる選手は他にもいるので a となるのだろう。

この単語、元々は「車輪が軸から脱けないようにするための留め具」とのことだそうが、

- the most important member of a group or part of a system, that holds together the other members or parts or makes it possible for them to operate as intended

- a person, policy, element, or the like that is crucial to the working of an organization or plan

などと辞書にあるように、mainstay とか anchor また pillar, backbone などと似た意味がある。lynchpin とも綴るという。

人以外に使われたものも含めて、次のような実例を見つけた。

- The 400 or so Belgian blue helmets formed the linchpin of the 2,500 UN Force.

- The U.S. network of defense partnerships in the region has, to this day, served as the linchpin for regional stability and security, particularly in the light of the continuing uncertainty in this part of the world.

- "Okinawa is the strategic linchpin to operational capabilities in East Asia," the commission said.

- Zucker calls "ER" the "linchpin" of NBC's "Must-See TV" Thursday lineup. Indeed, the show has finished each of its nine seasons as the top-rated program in its timeslot.

最後の文にある time slot とは放送時間帯、放送枠のこと。関連の単語としては次のようなものがある。

- prime time　…アメリカで通例午後８時から１１時まで
- fringe time　…prime time の前後の隣接時間帯

後者はまた、

- early fringe　…午後４時半から７時半頃まで
- late fringe　…午後１１時から午前１時まで

となるのだそうだ。日本では、かつて prime time は「ゴールデンアワー」とか「ゴールデンタイム」と呼ばれたり訳されたりしていたが、いまでは「プライムタイム」でＯＫだろう。

ちなみに視聴率調査会社の「ビデオリサーチ」は、午後７時から１１時までを「プライムタイム」、そのうち特に午後７時から１０時までを「ゴールデンタイム」としている。
