敵は内にあり (enemy within)

ウォーターゲート事件の情報提供者「ディープスロート」にからんで、内部情報を漏らすことをあらわす表現について書いてきた。こういう人物は、内部情報を隠したい側から見ると「身内の敵」ということになろうが、まさに enemy within という表現がある。

- Bin Laden, assuming he is alive and wired to the internet, would have enjoyed the Times on Saturday, which devoted the best part of a page to a story headlined "the new enemy within", warning of a potential bombing threat in the UK from a British-born sleeper from the Muslim community.

sleeper とは、ふだん普通の市民生活を送っていて、何かあると活動を始める敵の回し者・工作員を指す。９１１テロの後は、この例のように、外国に住んでいる過激派やテロリストのグループのメンバーを指すのによく使われているように思う。sleeper cell という単語もよく見かける。

スパイといえば、英語でもやはり「潜る」イメージがあるのか、mole と呼ぶこともある。plant なんていう単語も使われる。cloak-and-dagger は「秘密活動の、スパイ（もの）の」で、えらく古風な感じだが、時おり目にする。

「内なる敵」は、別に内通者やスパイには限らない。故ロバート・ケネディは、"The Enemy Within" という、アメリカの組織犯罪についての本を著していた。

- To meet the challenge of our times, so that we can later look back upon this era not as one of which we need be ashamed but as a turning point on the way to a better America, we must first defeat the enemy within. (Robert F. Kennedy)

within に対する without は outside というような意味で、enemy without は辞書の見出し語にないようだが、実例があった。

- To defeat the enemy without, we must defeat the enemy within.

- I absolutely believe that Bush after 9/11 felt he had to monitor phone conversations between the enemy within and without.

副詞や名詞の within, without は、辞書に archaic や「文語」といった注もある。

This sense of autonomy becomes an invaluable source of motivation which comes from within, rather than from without.

なおまったく関係ないが、映画「眼下の敵」の原題は "The Enemy Below" である。
