deus ex machina 「ご都合主義的なオチ」 [ラテン語・外来語]
- an unexpected, artificial, or improbable character, device, or event introduced suddenly in a work of fiction or drama to resolve a situation or untangle a plot
- unconvincing character who resolves plot: an improbable character or unconvincing event used to resolve a plot
- a person or event that provides a sudden and unexpected solution to a difficulty
- Worst of all, the movie has a deus ex machina ending.
- Rather than take the easy way out and provide a deus ex machina solution to the crisis, the writers force Archer (=ドラマの主人公) to make a decision that is sure to upset many viewers.
- 1697, from Mod.L. translation of Gk. theos ek mekhanes, lit. "the god from the machine," the device by which "gods" were suspended over the stage in Gk. theater
- < modern Latin, "god from the machinery" (used in Greek theater to lower actors onto the stage)
