dot にちなんだ表現

前回は ブッシュ大統領が使って批判を浴びた just a comma という表現を取り上げたが、今回は comma からの連想で、dot を使った言い回しを見ることにする。

まず、イディオム集などによく載っているのではと思われるのが on the dot 「時間通り」である。

- precisely; exactly at the time specified
on the dot of seven o'clock = at seven o'clock on the dot

自分の学習メモを見直すと、connect the dots という表現が書きとめてあった。

- The administration had been accused of not having connected the dots before 9/11. How could they afford to ignore the dots after 9/11?

- Several of those present wondered if the vice president knew something, or if he had connected things they had missed. He was a thorough reader of intelligence reports and connector of dots.

たくさんの点を番号順に線で結んでいくと何かの絵になる子供の知育教材のように、いろいろな情報をつなぎ合わせて真相に迫る、断片をつなぎあわせて全体像を浮かび上がらせる、ということであろう。

形容詞は connect-the-dots で、あるオンライン辞書には、

- 1. skillfully assembled: gathering information or facts from different sources to make a coherent whole
The article was a model of connect-the-dots journalism.
2. easy to do: straightforward or obvious
It's a connect-the-dots problem, easily solvable.

と説明されている。

松本清張の「点と線」の英語タイトルにも使えそうな表現だと思ったが、調べたらこの作品にはすでに英訳があり、タイトルは "Points and Lines" であった。

このほか、dot-com (あるいは dot com) は、

- noun: a company doing business mostly or solely on the Internet
- adjective: of or pertaining to such a company or to the business it conducts

また dot には「（花嫁の）持参金」 (dowry) という意味もある。

- money and/or property that, in some societies, a wife or her family must pay to her husband when they get married
