続・dot にちなんだ表現、「水玉模様」

前回取り上げた dot をめぐって、自分の学習ノートをさらに繰ってみると、sign on the dotted line という表現がメモしてあった。「全面的に同意する」 to agree fully to terms or conditions という意味で比喩的に使われている。

- Blair's spokesman assured the British press this week that the prime minister was not going to Texas to "sign on the dotted line" of any U.S. plan for Iraq.

文書などに署名する、という文字通りの意味では、以前 buyers remorse という表現について書いた時の実例でこの表現が使われていた。

ちょっと面白いと思う表現が dot the [one's] i's and cross the [one's] t's で、「詳細に記す」「細部にまで十分気を配る」「慎重を期する」という意味になる。

- to be meticulous or precise, even to the smallest detail
- to pay a great deal of attention to the details of something, especially when you are trying to complete a task
- to ensure that all details are correct
- to do something very carefully and in a lot of detail

- The negotiations are nearly finished, but we still have to dot the i's and cross the t's.
- She writes highly accurate reports - she always dots her i's and crosses her t's.

i の点を打ち忘れず、t の横棒をちゃんと引くのは当たり前ではないか、と私など思うが、ことさらこう言わないと「細部をゆるがせにしない」ことにならないのだろうか。まあ、イディオムの由来についてそこまで問い詰めてもあまり意味はないとは思うが。

最後に、イディオムではないが、polka dot は「水玉模様」のことである。しかし、なぜ polka なのだろうか。Online Etymology Dictionary と Wikipedia にはそれぞれこんな説明があった。

- Polka dot is first recorded 1884 and is named for the dance, for no reason except its popularity, which led to many contemporary products and fashions taking the name.

- While polka dots are ancient, they first became common on clothing in the late nineteenth century in Britain. At the same time polka music was extremely popular and the name was also applied to the pattern, despite no real connection between them.

スタンダードナンバーに Polka Dots and Moonbeams という名曲があり、以前取り上げたことがあるジャズ・ピアニストのビル・エヴァンス Bill Evans による、美しい演奏が遺されている。このアルバム、ジャケットの女性は美しいというべきか、妖しいというべきか、はたまた下品というべきか、いずれにせよ印象的である。
