first-generation は「一世」か？

「数にちなんだ英語表現」として前回「0」を取り上げたので、お次は「1」である。a first-generation American という言葉が出てきたとしたら、どう訳せばいいだろうか。アメリカ日系人のことも頭に浮かんだりするので、もちろん「一世」に決まってる―そう考えるかもしれない。はたして本当にそれでいいのであろうか。

では、こう呼ばれるのは、どういった人たちだろうか。日系人の「一世」とは、日本からアメリカに移住した世代のことだから、同じように考えればいいはずだ。そう答えるかもしれない。

ならば、ネットで見つけた次の例はどうだろうか。

- My parents were born elsewhere, I was born in the U.S., I consistently refer to myself as a first-generation American because I am the first generation to be born in America, even though both of my parents have had U.S. citizenship for decades.

つまり、この a first-generation American は、移民した親が生んだ子どもの世代、つまり日系人の流儀でいえば、「一世」ではなく、「二世」の方を指しているわけである。

日系人の「一世」「二世」はアメリカでは英語化しているので、今度はネットで Nisei を検索してみよう。

- Around 1910, the population of Issei (Japanese immigrants) and Nisei (first generation Japanese Americans) reached about 1000, many living in a crowded downtown block called Japanese Alley.

Nisei は second- ではなく、やはり first-generation で説明されている。

では、first-generation という単語は、日系人の流儀でいう「二世」を示すものと考えなくてはいけないのか、日系人でいう「一世」に使ってはいけないのだろうか。

上の Nisei を説明している部分の記述をよく見れば想像がつくように、そんなことはない。移住した最初の世代であることがわかるように表現しさえすればいいのである。ネットの実例を見てみよう。

- ISSEI: Literally, “first generation.” The first generation of Japanese to immigrate to the United States, largely from 1885 to 1920.

- The wisdom was handed down from the Issei, the first generation of Japanese immigrants.

また、"Nisei Memories" (by Paul Howard Takemoto) という本には、こんな記述がある。

- ...Issei [first-generation Japanese Americans--from ichi, the Japanese word for "one"; Nisei is derived from ni, Japanese for "two," and so forth. Japanese Americans consider the first generation to be the first to arrive in the United States]

回り道をしてまどろっこしい説明になったが、オンライン辞書で first-generation を引くと、下記のように、確かに２つの意味が載っている。移民について generation をどう数えるかは、視点をどこに置くかで変わってくるようなのである。

- 1. Of or relating to a person who has left one country and settled in another.
2. Of or relating to a person or persons whose parents are immigrants.

- 1. being the first generation of a family to be born in a particular country.
2. being a naturalized citizen of a particular country; immigrant: the child of first-generation Americans

- 1. denoting a person who is a naturalized citizen of a nation, having immigrated from another country.
2. sometimes, denoting such a person's offspring born in the new country.

ちなみに、私が持っている英和辞典には、両方の定義を記述したものがある一方で、ある辞書は、a first-generation American という用例について、単に「一世のアメリカ人」としか書いていなかった。

first-generation の意味をひとつに固定したものと考えていると、思わぬ誤解を生むかもしれない。結局、月並みではあるが、使われている状況・文脈を見極め、また自分から使う時は、必要に応じて言葉を補って意味をはっきりさせることが肝心、というところに落ち着きそうである。
