God にちなんだ表現 [聖書・キリスト教と英語]
先日、「神」に関係する the Great I Am という表現を取り上げたのにちなんで、今回は God にちなんだその他の言い回しについて短く書くことにする。
まず、畏れ多い「神」のまねをする to play God が頭に浮かぶ。「神のごとく振る舞う」「神様を気取る」といった訳になるだろうか。ネットではこんな例が見つかった。
- The debate over advanced genetic engineering such as germline intervention brings us directly to the questions popularized by newspaper headlines: Should we ask our scientists to play God? Or, should we ask them to refrain from playing God?
名詞の godsend は「思わぬ幸運」 something good which happens unexpectedly, especially at a time when it is needed ということだが、文脈によっては、まさに「神風」なんて訳もできるかもしれない。辞書には「天の賜物」という訳語もあった。
The Web was a godsend for lowering the barrier to access information.
形容詞の God-given は、字のごとく「神から授けられた」「天与の」だが、very fitting or opportune; welcome; suitable といった意味でも使われる。
- He seems to think he has a God-given right to tell us all what to do.
