「２度目の推測」ではない second-guess [数にちなむ表現]
「数にちなんだ単語・表現」として「２」を続ける。不思議なことだが、「２」がからむ単語には、ネガティブな意味を持つ動詞がいくつかある。手はじめに second-guess を取りあげてみよう。
私はこの単語を「予期する、先を読む」というような意味で覚えた。英英辞典の定義と例文を見ると、確かに、
- to anticipate or predict (someone’s actions or thoughts) by guesswork
- to try to guess what will happen or what someone will do
It's not for us to second-guess the court's decision - we'll just have to wait and see.
- to predict (something) or outguess (someone):We must try to second-guess what he'll do next.
とある。しかしその後、他の意味もあることを知った。
- (US) to criticize someone's actions or an event after it has happened:Of course it's easy to second-guess the management of the election campaign, but I do think serious mistakes were made.
- to criticize or question actions or decisions of (someone) often after the results of those actions or decisions are known
- to use hindsight in criticizing or correcting.
- evaluate or criticize with hindsight
つまり、後でとやかく言うこと、後知恵であれこれ難癖をつけることを指す。以前、Monday-morning quarterback という単語を取り上げたことがあるが、これを one who second-guesses と定義している辞書もあった。
パソコンにクリッピングしてある英文テキストから、さらに実例を探してみた。
- He cautioned against second-guessing the judgment of the officers who were on the scene.
- George H.W. Bush has been, in effect, sidelined by nepotism. He has repeatedly told close friends that he does not believe it is appropriate or wise to second-guess his son, or even offer advice beyond loving support.
second-guess がどうしてこういった意味を持つのだろうか、由来をオンライン辞書で調べてみた。
- 1941, back-formation from second-guesser (1937), Amer.Eng., originally baseball slang for a fan who loudly questions decisions by players, managers, etc.; perhaps from guesser in the baseball slang sense of "umpire."

つまり、second-guesser は動詞に -er をつけたのではなく、逆にこちらが動詞より先にできたらしいということで、面白い。ある英和辞典には guesser の俗語の意味として、「いいかげんな審判員」とあった。
なお、上に出てきた back-formation は「逆成（法、語）」と辞書に書かれている。「語尾を接尾辞・屈折語尾とみなし、これを除去して新語をつくること」である。

そういえば、昔覚えた表現の中に、確か、「The old man is in his second childhood. その老人はもうろくしている」というものがあったように記憶しています。
あまりよい意味ではないのかもしれませんね。
