double- がつくネガティブな単語 (「二枚舌」「ちんぷんかんぷん」など) [数にちなむ表現]
数字の「２」にちなんだ単語として、今回もマイナスのイメージを持つものを取り上げよう。
cross にはいろいろな意味がある。動詞は「横切る」「交差する」、形容詞だと「十字形の」の他に「ご機嫌斜め」、名詞では「横断」や「十字架、十時の印」を指し、xx と手紙に書けば「キス」を表す。では、double-cross という動詞はどんな意味になるであろうか。
- (informal) to betray or cheat by acting contrary to a previous agreement.
- to cheat or deceive (especially a colleague or ally, or someone one is supposed to be helping)
- to deceive someone by working only for your own advantage in the (usually illegal) activities you have planned together
The diamond thief double-crossed his partners and gave them only worthless fake jewels.
つまり、仲間などを「だます」「裏切る」ということである。「裏切られる」なら get double-crossed になる。

- deliberately evasive or ambiguous language: When you try to get a straight answer, he gives you double-talk.
- ambiguous language meant to deceive people or evade problems or issues.
Example a politician known for his double-talk.
ジョージ・オーウェルの小説「1984年」に doublethink という言葉・概念がでてくるが、これとも関係があるのだろうか。
もうひとつ、double-tongue は「吹奏楽器をダブルタンギング（複切法）で吹く」ことだそうだが、形容詞の double-tongued は
deceitful; hypocritical; making contrary declarations on the same subject
という意味で、日本語の「二枚舌」と同じになるので面白い。
このように、他人からは受けたくない行為ばかりを表す単語が並んだが、そもそも double には
having two meanings with intent to deceive; acting in contrasting or opposing ways: acting one way while feeling very differently, especially when this involves hypocrisy or deceit
という意味があるので、当然といえば当然かもしれない。日本語でも「二重の」を「裏表ある」と取ればいい印象はないのと同じようなものなのだろう。

はじめまして。「double-cross」という単語に思わず反応してしまいました。
エラリー・クイーンの「緋文字」という小説では、この単語に関係した一種のトリックが使われています。この「double-cross」という単語を知らなかったので、読み終わってから、「なるほど！」という感じでした。

香里園さん初めまして。コメントありがとうございます。「緋文字」というと私はホーソーンの作品を連想してしまいますが、エラリイ・クイーンも書いているのですね。今度読んでみたいと思います。

最近は物忘れがひどいので、一昨日書いたコメントを完全に復元できる自信はありませんが、簡単に言えば、クイーンは、ホーソンの「緋文字」のミステリー版を書いたということです。
もちろん、内容は原作とはかなり異なりますが、｢姦通｣が大きく関係しており、「double-cross」を使ったトリックが出てきます。
「double-cross」は、表記上、「ＸＸ」と書かれるようですが、この書き順が、犯行を解くカギになっております。詳細は、クイーンの本を一読されると分かります。
