人を指す has-been、および might-have-been [ニュースと英語]
アメリカの超党派グループがイラクの出口戦略を練っていることについて先日書いたが、その結論が発表された。
全文はネットでも読めるが、何せ長い。手っ取り早いのは委員たちの記者会見についての記事だ。報告書の大まかな内容とあわせて、老練な彼らの巧みな質疑応答が参考になる。この会見から、面白いと思った単語や表現について書いてみたい。

この中に、委員会を率いたジェームズ・ベーカー氏の次のような発言がある。
- Let me add to that that this report by this bunch of has-beens up here is the only bipartisan report that's out there.
this bunch of has-beens と冗談めかした言葉にすぐ続けて、the only bipartisan report だという重い事実を指摘していること、up here と out there もたぶん意図的に対にしてあることなど、即興の短い文だが、さすがうまいものだなあ、と思った。記者会見についての ABC News の記事も、この単語を使って 'Has Beens' on Center Stage というタイトルをつけていた。
この has-been だが、意味は、
- (informal) a person or thing considered to be outmoded or no longer of any significance
- one that has passed the peak of effectiveness or popularity
- a person who was famous, important, admired, or good at something in the past, but is no longer any of these
She's a has-been TV star.
で、複数は has-beens になる。そんなに古くない言葉だろうと思ったが、とんでもない誤りだった。

ついでだが、back-number は、雑誌の back issue を指すほか、この has-been の類語でもある。
- someone who is no longer popular [syn: has-been]
- anything considered old-fashioned.
has-been からの連想で頭に浮かんだ単語が might-have-been (複数形 might-have-beens) である。
- (informal) an event or situation that could have happened or that you wish had happened, but did not
- a past possibility that no longer applies
- something that might have happened: an event or outcome that could have occurred but did not
This is one of the great might-have-beens of modern history.
自分の学習ファイルには、こんな例がメモしてあった。

- The might-have-beens of Annan's two terms center on his rocky relations with the Bush administration, which have left scars on both sides.
面白いことに、英和辞典には、「そうなったかもしれないこと」のほかに、「もっと偉く[有名に]なったかもしれない人」「出世しそこなった人」などとあって、人を表す場合にも使えるように受け取れる。しかし、オンラインの英英辞典は、調べた限りではどれも上記のように事物を指すように読める。人については、実際にはあまり使われないということであろうか。
さてこの報告書、ネットで斜め読みをした限りでは、現状分析や提言の一部は、以前からいろいろ指摘のあった内容が含まれているという印象を受けた。マスメディアの中にも「新味はない」と評している記事もあったが、裏を返せば、疑念や反対の声にもかかわらず、これまでブッシュ政権がいかに非柔軟な政策を取っていたかということだろう。
"stay the course" というのは、多くの人が現状に満足している場合に聞くフレーズだと思っていたが、どうやら自分の思い込みだったことに気づかされたしだいである。
