「交渉する」ではない negotiate （カズオ・イシグロ「浮世の画家」）

前回、カズオ・イシグロの小説 "An Artist of the Floating World" を紹介したが、この作品の最後の方に、「この単語の意外な意味」に当てはまりそうな例が出てくる。ご存じない方がいたら、知っておいて損はないのではと思ったので、取り上げたい。negotiate という単語である。

主人公の画家が、師匠の家で開かれた宴会の最中、ひとり席を離れて納屋に入ってみる、という場面である。納屋には、いろいろなものがところ狭しと置かれている。ここで出てくる文が、

- I negotiated my way to a clearing on the floor and sat down.

この数ページあとに、師匠が納屋に入ってくる場面があるが、ここでやはり negotiate を使った文が出てくる。

- He continued to study the pictures for a few moments more, then began to come back across the room. It seemed to me that he took an inordinate amount of time negotiating his way through the objects on the floor.

negotiate といえば、辞書の最初に載っている「交渉する」「協議する」（自動詞）、「～を話し合って取り決める」(他動詞）といった意味がまず思い浮かぶだろうが、上の例はそれでは意味が通らない。

この単語には、加えて、

- to manage to get past or deal with something that constitutes a hazard or obstacle
- to find a way over or through (an obstacle or difficult path)
- to manage to travel along a difficult route
- to move through, around, or over in a satisfactory manner

といった意味がある。英和では「（難所）をうまく切り抜ける、通り抜ける」といった訳が与えられている。

私の学習ファイルには、

The train can automatically tilt inwards to negotiate curves at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour.

という例がメモしてあった。オンラインの英英辞書を見ると、

- A canoe can negotiate these waters when the wind is calm.
- The only way to negotiate the muddy hillside is on foot.
- negotiate a sharp curve
- negotiate a difficult musical passage
- to negotiate a difficult dance step without tripping

などといった用例が載っている。さまざまな場面で使えそうだ。

なぜこういった異なる意味が出てくるのか、語源を見ると、ラテン語から来た単語で from negotiari ‘do in the course of business’などと説明されているが、はっきりとした変遷の筋道を書いたものは見つからず、いまひとつすっきりとしない思いである。
