- The University of Leipzig had a convicted but escaped student hanged in effigy on 8 March 1723.

- Both dukes were dictatorial, and during the junior duke's own reign later, a horn player asking for dismissal was actually condemned to a hundred lashes and prison, and on escaping was hanged in effigy.
(Peter Williams: The Life of Bach)

- Demonstrators plan to topple an effigy of Bush in a display evoking the toppling of the statue of Saddam Hussein by U.S. forces in Baghdad in April.

- an image or representation especially of a person; especially: a crude figure representing a hated person

- dummy representing somebody disliked: a dummy, often roughly made and intentionally amusing or insulting, representing somebody disliked or despised

- to burn or hang an image or picture of the person intended to be executed, disgraced or degraded

to burn or hang the representation of a person, instead of the person himself, in order to show popular hatred, dislike, or contempt. The custom comes from France, where the public executioner used to hang the effigy of the criminal when the criminal himself could not be found.

The effigy is burned as a sign of the participants' shared intent to banish the represented element from their lives. The best known British example is the burning of an effigy made of straw and/or old clothing depicting the 17th century Catholic conspirator, Guy Fawkes.

hang [burn] in effigy
