cautiously optimistic? （oxymoron について）

北朝鮮の核協議についてアメリカのライス国務長官が上院で語った内容を報じた英文記事を読んでいたら、面白い表現に出くわした。北朝鮮が柔軟な姿勢を見せていることについてのコメントである。

- I think we are cautiously optimistic that there may be some movement forward.

- I am cautiously optimistic that we may be able to begin, again, to implement the joint statement of 2005 toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

- I am, as I said, cautiously optimistic but I don't count my chickens until they are hatched.

このように、ライス国務長官は何度も "cautiously optimistic" と言っている。ネットで調べると随分とヒットし、別にライス長官が初めてというわけではなく、以前から使われている言い回しであることがわかった。

一見相反する内容の単語を組み合わせたものを oxymoron というが、ネットにはそうした oxymoronic な表現を集めたサイトがいくつかある。そこでさらに調べてみると、みなこの cautiously optimistic を載せていた。どうやら由緒ある（？）表現のようだ。

ネットで見つけた実例はネットでいくつも見つかるが、次のようなコメントもあった。

- For most of my life I thought that cautious optimism was an oxymoron -- that people were either optimistic or pessimistic, and anyone who professed to be cautiously optimistic was sitting on the fence, waiting to see which way the wind blew, or, worse yet, really pessimistic and trying to hide it.

- I don’t know about you, but I’m getting mighty tired of hearing the ‘cautiously optimistic’ phrase being used all over the place.

私は根っからの日本人で、物事というものはそんなに単純化できるわけはない、と考えてしまうたちなので、この cautiously optimistic のような表現を見つけるとうれしくなる。しかし、こうした否定的なコメントを読むと、やっぱり英語ではこうした発想は否定的にとらえられるのか、とちょっとがっかりしてしまう。either-orism という単語が頭によぎったりもする。

さて最後に、気軽に楽しめる oxymoron についての本を紹介しておこう。open secret, tough love, small crowd, alone together, home office, easy problem など、論理的に突き詰めればちょっとヘンに思える表現を取り上げ、イラストで表現したものだ。児童向けの本で、読んで大笑い、というほどではないが、英語を学んでいる非ネイティヴにはちょっとした暇つぶしにはなりそうである。
