「さくら」は英語で何という？

桜が見ごろになった。ついでに、花ではない方の「さくら」は英語で何というのだろうか、といえば出来の悪いおやじギャグになるが、そう思い立ったので、素直にやってみることにした。

和英辞典を調べて内容を列挙してもいいが、まずは自作の英語学習ノートから、「さくら」に相当しそうな実例を探してみた。

最初は、

“Senator, is Joan in favor of your running for President?” the “plant” asked. Ted paused for a moment then, acting as if the question was impromptu, he turned to Joan and offered to let her address it.

題名をメモしなかったので、何から取ったのか今となってはわからないが、文面からみて、アメリカの大統領選挙か、「ケネディもの」のノンフィクションで見つけたもののようだ。Ted とはエドワード・ケネディ上院議員、Joan は彼の妻（のちに離婚）を指す。

この部分、ケネディ議員は不意に質問を受けたように振舞ったが、実は「さくら」に仕込んだ「やらせ」の質問だった、ということだろう。

この plant は以前、ウォーターゲート事件の「ディープ・スロート」にちなんで enemy within という表現を取り上げた時にもちょっと言及した。その時にも書いたが、「さくら」といった軽い存在ではなく、「敵の回し者」という意味にもなる。ある辞書にはこんな説明があった。

a person or thing put into place in order to mislead or function secretly, especially: a. A person placed in a group of spectators to influence behavior. b. A person stationed in a given location as a spy or observer. c. A misleading piece of evidence placed so as to be discovered.

次に移ろう。

Mycroft smiled. "'The best way to tell a lie effectively is to tell the truth badly,'" he quoted. "With the help of a few stooges planted in the audience, and a little misdirection, he has sown the seeds of a real panic."

これも書名は忘れたが、シャーロック・ホームズのパスティーシュ作品で見つけてメモしたものだ。Mycroft とは原典にも出てくるホームズの兄のことである。先ほどの plant は、ここでは動詞で使われている。

この stooge は、この部分だけではわかりにくいかもしれないが、読んでいた時、話の流れから「これはいわゆる”さくら”だな」と思ってメモした記憶がある。英和辞典を見ると、確かに「引き立て役、ぼけ役、さくら」という訳があった。英英辞典には次のように説明されている。

a person who is employed to assume a particular role while keeping their true identity hidden また a performer in a show whose role is to appear silly so that the other performers can make jokes about him or her

このほかメモしていた単語として

- ... people who clapped were just shills

- ... a claque employed by the sponsors

この２つの単語、ノートにはこう書いてあるだけだったが、今回改めて辞書を引いたら、異なる意味を持つようだ。

shill
pretended customer or gambler: an accomplice who pretends to be an interested customer or gambler in order to lure others into buying or gambling

claque
paid audience: a group of people hired to applaud a performance

もっとも自分が使う時には、claque といった難しい単語を無理に覚えずとも、

He’s just a hired applauder.

という例文のような、平易な表現で十分だろう。

ちなみにまったく関係ないが、綴りの似ている clique は a small group of people, with shared interests or other features in common, who spend time together and do not readily allow other to join them ということで、「徒党」と訳されている。

和英辞典をみると、「さくら」としては decoy もあげられているほか、by-bidder, gee という単語もあるそうだ。
