「ギャグ」ではない gag

先日、「つまらぬおやじギャグ」とお断わりしたうえで、花ではない方の「さくら」を英語でどういうかを取り上げた。また前回は choke についても少し触れた。そこで連想したのが gag だが、この単語は「ギャグ」の他に、「声が出せないように口の中に詰めるもの」「さるぐつわ」という意味がある。

something put over mouth: something such as a piece of cloth that is forcibly put over or into somebody's mouth to prevent the person from speaking or crying out

語源については、15th century. Probably an imitation of the sound of choking. とあって、面白い。

コロケーションは、「冗談を飛ばす、かつぐ」場合は pull a gag だが、「さるぐつわをする」の方だと put a gag (on someone) になるとのこと。

動詞でも使われる。次は、Dan Brown のベストセラー The Da Vince Code から拾ってメモしておいた例である。

Silas could hear Teabing's muffled cries and realized Remy had used some of the old duct tape to gag him.

ついでだが、この duct tape は「ガムテープ」のことであり、和製英語の方で覚えないよう注意が必要だろう。

gag はまた、「言論を封殺する（こと）」という意味にもなる。gag order は「報道禁止令、緘口令」。gag rule [law] は、議会などの「発言制限規則」を指すそうだ。

さらに動詞の gag は、

to experience the sudden, uncomfortable feeling of tightness in the throat and stomach that makes you feel you are going to vomit

また、ここから比喩的に派生したのだろう、

to be unable to endure something

という意味もオンラインの辞書に載っていた。

マスメディア好みの短い単語ということもあってか、（何々） make(s) you gag といった表現を時おり新聞などで見かける。「ギャグ」からの連想で、「笑わせる」などと誤解しないよう、注意が必要だ。

こうした gag のいくつかの意味を組み合わせて、"The gags here really make you gag." とか "Gag rules are enough to make you gag." というような、形式はおやじギャグ風、内容はお笑いとは無関係、という文もあった。

ところで、口を封じる gag と「冗談」は、関係があるのだろうか。オンラインの語源辞典には

- gag (v.) c.1440, "to choke, strangle," possibly imitative or influenced by O.N. gaghals "with head thrown back." The sense of "stop a person's mouth" is first attested 1509. The noun is 1553, from the verb.

- gag (n.) "joke," 1823, probably related to theatrical sense of "matter interpolated in a written piece by the actor" (1847), or from slang verbal sense of "to deceive, take in with talk" (1777), both on notion of "stuff, fill" (see gag (v.)).

とあったが、どうもいまひとつよくわからない。
