if を使った表現をいくつか

前回取り上げた iffy からの連想で、if が使われた言い回しをいくつか見てみよう。まずは not if, but when である。イディオムとして辞書に載っているわけではないが、"The question is not if, but when." あるいは "It's not a question of if, but when." といった形で、しばしばお目にかかる組み合わせだ。

私の学習ノートにメモしてあった例では、

Judging from Bush's side comments and body language, Calio assumed that the question on Iraq was not if but when there would be a war.

辞書に載っている言い回しのひとつに ifs, ands, or buts (イギリス英語では ifs and buts) がある。「もし」とか「でも」といった言い訳であるが、これを連発されれば誰でもイライラする。そこで辞書にある次のような例文と相成る。

- I don't want any ifs and buts.
- No ifs and buts--just make sure everything is ready by tomorrow!

「四の五のいうな！」「ガタガタいうな！」といった感じであろうか。

ところでこの表現、オンラインの Cambridge International Dictionary of Idioms には、

something that you say to a child to stop them arguing with you when you want them to do something
I want no ifs and buts, just tidy your room like I told you to!
No ifs, ands or buts, you're going up to bed now!

とあった。「子供に対して使う」という注は、他の辞書には見当たらない。大人には使わないというのも想像しがたいのだが。

もうひとつ、what if... は「～したらどうなるだろう」ということだが、what-if という名詞としても使われる。辞書には a situation, difficulty, or obstacle that could arise in the future (informal),　a hypothetical case or situation などといった説明があった。

自分の学習ノートから、ヒトラーについての英文に出てきた例。ここではハイフンはついていなかった。

None of those around him had the same sort of evil charisma. The conditions he fed on may have been largely unavoidable but the Nazi revolution he created and led was not. Nor can a phenomenon so focused on one man and his whims evolve in a predictable pattern. Hitler's mind was a virtual Pandora's box of what ifs.

最後に、面白いのが if のあとに時間や距離、重さ、また貨幣の短い単位をつけた if a day, if an hour, if an inch, if a yard, if a cent, if a dime といった言い回しである。これは例文を見た方がいいだろう。以下、「リーダーズ英和辞典」からの引用である。

- He is seventy if a day.
彼はどうしたって70歳は行っている。

- It cost twenty dollars if a dime.
それは確かに20ドルした。

- She measures six feet if an inch.
彼女は少なくとも6フィートある。

- I have walked 15 miles, if a yard.
15マイルは確かに歩いた。
