spice of life （マンハッタン・トランスファー） [音楽と英語]
前回の a slice of life からの連想で、響きが似た spice が使われているのが "Variety is the spice of life." という決まり文句である。「変化は人生の薬味」と辞書にある。島倉千代子ではないが、「人生、いろいろあるから面白い」ということか。

spice of life という表現は、その昔、The Manhattan Transfer が歌った同名の曲で出会った。"Bodies and Souls" という1983年に出たアルバムの最初の曲で、"Tonight, let's taste the spice of life." と歌われている。
当時学生だった私にとって、マンハッタン・トランスファーの音楽は、さかんに聞いていた日本や米英のポップスとは趣が違うお洒落なもので、ジャズボーカルものに興味を持つきっかけになった、思い出深いものだ。彼らは今も現役で活躍している。

The original form of "Variety is the spice of life" seems to come from a poem by the English poet William Cowper (pronounced the same as Cooper): "Variety's the very spice of life,
That gives it all its flavour.

I came across an article titled "Variety is the spice of skiing" in SKI POINTERS BY THE EXPERTS (Harpers & Brothers 1961) in the early 60s. That's how I learned the expression "Variety is the spice of life."
