「縁の下の力持ち」と unsung

前回紹介した"The Professor and the Madman" にからんで、この本の中に出てきた unsung という単語についてちょっと書いてみたい。

George Merrett has become an absolutely unsung man.

という形で使われていた。unsung は、sing の過去分詞の sung に un- がついた形で、「歌われたことがない」ということだが、「歌われていない人」と考えると、何のことやらわからない。

この単語には、もうひとつ、

not praised or honored: not given the praise or honor that is due

という意味がある。文語あるいは formal という注をつけている辞書もある。

私がこの意味を覚えたのは、その昔、何かで「『縁の下の力持ち』は英語で unsung hero という」と読んだからだった。この表現についてある英英辞典は

a person who makes a substantive yet unrecognized contribution; a person whose bravery is unknown or unacknowledged Example: They were the unsung heroes of the American Revolution.

と説明している。文字通り「陰のヒーロー」と訳した方がふさわしい場合もあるだろう。先の "The Professor and the Madman" にあった unsung man は、「縁の下の力持ち」のほか、「陰の功労者」ということもできそうだ。

ちなみに「研究社和英大辞典」で「縁の下の力持ち」を引くと、unsung hero のほかに、

- a person who carries out a thankless task [job]

- a person whose efforts are unappreciated [unsung, unrewarded, unnoticed]

- a force behind the scenes

- He is content with always laboring in the background [doing a thankless task].

といった訳例や例文があげられていた。

ついでにもうひとつ、backroom boy という表現がある。主にイギリスで使われるようだ。

- (mostly UK) Someone who has an anonymous support role in an organization, especially a technician or scientist; a boffin.

- an expert adviser involved in making important decisions but usually lacking official status

- (informal) someone who does a lot of work in the type of job where they are not often seen by the public.
Editors are very much the backroom boys of the film world.
(often plural)

「裏方」や「黒子」ではあるが、中でも専門知識の高い人を指すらしい。最初の定義に同義語としてあげられている boffin という単語は、

- MAINLY UK INFORMAL a scientist who is considered to know a lot about science and not to be interested in other things:
a technical/computer boffin

と説明されていた。
