「雄鶏の尾」ではない rooster tail

家のCDラックにある今井美樹のアルバムが久しぶりに目に留まった。もう何年も聞いていなかったので、車を運転するついでに持って行って車中で聞いた。彼女が活躍し始めた初期のCDで、布袋寅秦と組んだ後の大ヒット「PRIDE」などに比べると、声が初々しい。

この "elfin" というタイトルのCDの中に、「土砂降りの日であっても、恋をしている自分には街が洗われて輝いて見える」と歌う「どしゃ降りWonderland」という歌がある。この中で、水たまりを通った車が水しぶきを跳ね上げる様子が、「孔雀みたいに」と表現されている。

迷惑なはずの水しぶきもこう思えるほど気持ちが高まっている、というわけだが、この部分を久しぶりに聞いて、「そういえば、何か似たような英単語があったはず」と、ロマンチックというのとは程遠い考えが浮かんだ。

しばらくして思い出したのが、rooster tail という表現だった。いつ、何でこの言い回しに出会ったのかは覚えていないし、自分から使ったこともないはずだが、帰宅してから辞書で調べた。こんな説明が見つかった。

- （モーターボート・サーフボードが上げる）後方への水しぶき

- the spray of water thrown up behind a speedboat or surfboard

- a projected mass of fine particles, as of water or snow, having an arced shape similar to that of a rooster's tail

- the wake thrown up behind a speeding boat or the dust thrown up behind a speeding vehicle　 (wake: 船の通った跡、航跡；物の通った跡・道；大災害のあと)

英和辞典では、水しぶきのことしか書かれていないが、英英辞典だと、舞い上げられた雪やほこりの描写にも使えるようだ。オンラインの辞書には、動詞の例もあった。ネットで見つけた実例とあわせて引用する。

- What really amazed me was the height of the rooster-tail behind the ship. I don't know the elevation of the fantail, but I remember the rooster-tail being over my head.

- The engines sent a rooster-tail spray of seawater 20 feet in the air.

- Pretty soon we saw the giant rooster tail of dust rising behind the car as it noiselessly made its way towards us

- Snow packs up on the rear of the suspect vehicle, and they just fade out. Quickly. Then, if the car you're chasing is moving fairly fast, they throw up a rooster tail of snow, and you don't even get to see the reflections from their headlights.

- I got the car cranked and we rooster-tailed out of there.

今井美樹のCDが出たのは私が社会人になってしばらくした頃で、聞いていて当時の自分を懐かしく思い出した。ネットで調べたら、残念ながら廃盤のようだ。

ちなみにタイトルになっている elfin とは、elf （複数形 elves、小妖精；いたずらっ子）と関係があり、「小さい；小妖精の（ような）；不思議な力（魅力）のある」 (small, delicate, and charmingly sprightly, lively, or mischievous; having a magical charm or appeal) という意味である。
