l と r の誤りを表す単語

前回、sh と s の音の違いに関係する shibboleth という単語について書いたが、日本人にとって区別の苦手な音といえば、何と言っても l と r だろう。しかし、これらの音に問題を抱えるのは、日本人だけに限ったことではないらしく、ある時、こうした発音の誤りを表す英単語があることを知った。lallation, lambdacism, rhotacism がそれである。

まず lallation について、英英辞典の定義を見てみよう。

- the incorrect pronunciation of the letter "r" so that it sounds like an "l"
- an imperfect enunciation of the letter r, in which it sounds like l

- gibberish resembling the sounds of a baby

r音の間違いだけでなく、赤ちゃんのような話し方をも指すようだが、語源について、Mid-17th century. < Latin lallation- < lallare "sing a lullaby" という記述があるので、もともと赤ん坊と関連がある単語なのだろうか。

ほぼ同じ意味を表すのが、lambdacism である。

- the use of the sound of l for that of r in pronunciation; lallation

- fault in speaking or in composition, which consists in too frequent use of the letter "l", or in doubling it erroneously

これも、 l を r のように発音しがちな日本人とは逆の現象を表すようだ。また、やはり r音と l音の取り違え以外の意味もあるので、ちょっとややこしい。lambda- のところは、l に相当するギリシャ語の「ラムダ」であるとのこと。

英語を学んでいると、「l と r はまったく別の子音である」と聞かされ、これらの混同が日本人特有の間違いであるかのような気になってくるが、こうした単語が存在するということは、必ずしもそうではないということだろう。

これらの単語が、主に非ネイティブスピーカーの言語使用について使うのか、英語以外の言語について使われるものなのかなど、詳しいことは知らないが、いずれにせよ、発音の誤りという点で、この２つの音の間につながりがあることが認められているということになるのではないか。

さて、もうひとつの rhotacism だが、rho- はギリシャ語の「ロー」、つまり r である。動詞は rhotacize、形容詞は rhotacistic となる。

- Historical Linguistics. a change of a speech sound, esp. (s), to (r), as in the change from Old Latin "lases" to Latin "lares."
- excessive use of the sound (r), its misarticulation, or the substitution of another sound for it.
- a defective utterance of the /r/ sounds; a sort of lisping - as 'weally, quite attwactive' for 'really, quite attractive'.

ラテン語では、s が r になってしまうそうで、そんなこともあるのか、と面白く思った。また、一部の日本人にみられる、不必要なところにまで r の音を付加して響かせる発音も、この単語で表現できるそうに思えるが、どうなのだろうか。

また、rhotacize には to pronounce (a vowel) with r-color という意味があり、母音のあとの r を響かせるアメリカ英語の特徴もこれで表現できるようだ。

さて、上の３つ目の定義にある lisp を辞書で引くと、

- a speech defect in which 's' is pronounced like 'th' in 'thick' and 'z' in pronounced like 'th' in 'this'
- a speech fault in which the sound 's' is pronounced 'th'

とある。日本人がやはり苦手とする s と t の音について、逆の形で発せられる誤りを示している。

ついでに、rhotacism を Wikipedia でみると、日本語の特徴として、次のような記述があった。l と r の音というが、実際はもっと複雑なようである。

The Japanese language does not have a phoneme equivalent to the English 'l' or 'r'; the closest sound is referred to as an alveolar lateral flap. Loanwords with 'l' or 'r' in the original language are represented using this sound, and in romanized Japanese text the letter 'r' is used, regardless of whether the original was an 'r' or 'l' to begin with. Accordingly, Japanese people are faced with rhotacism-type trouble in pronouncing the letters 'r' and 'l', as well as difficulty in differentiating between the two sounds. 以上、日本人が苦手だといわれる音に関係のありそうな単語を紹介したが、私は実際に使われた例に触れたことはまだないし、以前ネイティブスピーカー（ごく一般の人）と話した時に持ち出したら相手は知らなかった。

かなり専門度の高い語彙なのかもしれないが、単純にこれらの単語が面白いと思ったので、今回、メモとして書いておくことにした。私はこうした分野を専門に学んだわけではなく、間違った理解をしていたら、指摘していただければ幸いである。

grammar から glamo(u)r が生まれたことは私もどこかで学んだことがあり、実はそうなった経緯を自分なりに調べて、今回の続きとして書こうと思っておりました。
しかしわかりやすい Chuck さんの説明を紹介していただき、その必要もなくなったように思います。どうもありがとうございました。

英語の専門家ではない私にとって、このような話は、知っていても知らなくても何が違うというわけではありませんが、人の使う言葉とは理屈だけでは割り切れないものだな、という思いを強くさせられます。
