vox pop 「街の声」「街頭インタビュー」

朝日新聞の「天声人語」は、"Vox Populi, Vox Dei" という題で英訳され、紙上やサイトで読むことができる。このラテン語を縮めて、「街の声」「街頭インタビュー」という意味で使われる単語が vox pop である。

まずはネットで見つけた実例をいくつか書いてみよう。

- He carried out a vox pop on the public reaction to the murder.

- I went and did a vox-pop on what people knew about the Hutton inquiry.

- In one bulletin, an Ekho Moskvy correspondent took a vox-pop of opinions on the streets of Moscow about measures to improve their security.

- She conducted a “Vox Pop” among the participants. to see what their definitions of professionalism were.

英語学習という点では、英語ニュースの「街の声」によって、一般の人のいろいろな話し方に触れることができて面白い。早口、クセのある発音、不完全な文、などは聞き取って理解するのがときに難物だが、専門の訓練を受けているアナウンサーとは違う、より「生の英語」に触れることができる。

vox pop, また Vox populi, vox dei についての Wikipedia の説明を一部引用してみよう。

- Usually the interviewees are shown in public places, and supposed to be giving spontaneous opinions in a chance encounter -- unrehearsed persons, not selected in any way. As such, broadcast journalists almost always refer to them as the abbreviated vox pop. In U.S. broadcast journalism it is often referred to as a man on the street interview.

- Often quoted as, Vox populi, vox dei, "The voice of the people is the voice of God", is an old proverb often erroneously attributed to William of Malmesbury in the twelfth century.

Another early reference to the expression is in a letter from Alcuin to Charlemagne in 798, although it is believed to have been in earlier use.

Voxpops can perhaps be criticised for being "lazy" television, or being used to pad time. As it is just a "man on the street" opinion, one can perhaps question the value of broadcasting a randomly chosen person's opinions.

オンラインの Dictionary of Phrase and Fable には、

This does not mean that the voice of the many is wise and good, but only that it is irresistible.

という説明があった。

いずれにせよ、メディアの vox pop で伝えられる声は、統計学的な手法で行われる世論調査とは別物であることに注意しないといけないだろう。

ちなみに、「天声人語」は「天に声あり、人をして語らしむ」 ということだそうで、こちらの方には、"wise and good" というニュアンスが感じられるように思うが、どうだろうか。朝日新聞もそれを狙ってタイトルに使ったのではないだろうか。中国の古典に由来する言葉といわれているが、実際には出典不明で、創作ではないかという説を読んだ記憶がある。

余談だが、ネイティブスピーカーの中には、「天声人語」のような新聞のコラムやエッセイの類の英訳を読むと、どうもよくわからないことがある、という人がいる。私も直接そうした意見を聞いたことがある。

つまり、日本語としては読ませる文章であっても、論理の展開が英語や英語圏の文化にうまく合わず、段落を入れ替えたり、原文にない補足を加えたりするくらいでは、十分でない場合があるからだろう。

こうしたコラムと英訳は、和文英訳の教材として利用することがあるだろうが、個々の表現力をつけるためにはよくても、日本語的な話の展開に沿った英語の文章を書くクセが身についてしまう恐れはないのだろうか。逆に、こうした学習を繰り返すことによって、そんなクセが心配されるくらいまでの英語力をつけることがまず必要なのかもしれない、と思ったりもする。英語教育の専門家の間では、こうした長文の英訳学習はどのように考えられているのだろうか。

I have just found the following in an Encyclopaedia Britannica article about radio: "Vox Pop (from the Latin for “voice of the people”) was an interview show. It originated in Houston, Tex., as a man-in-the-street program and was later transferred to New York to become one of the most popular shows on the air."

That reminds me of NHK Radio's "街頭録音" program that probably imitated the "Vox Pop" show. You are probably too young to have listened to "街頭録音" on the radio.

OED's first citation is "In television..we could include..the use of the brief survey of popular opinion on any topic of the posed question (the so-called 'vox pop' (1964 Hall & Whannel Popular Arts ix. 225)"
