recap 「要点のおさらい」「メインニュースをもう一度」 [ニュースと英語]
Simon Singh という科学ライターが書いたノンフィクション "Big Bang" に、次のような文があった。文中の recap という単語は、前回の vox pop 同様、ニュースで聞くことがある単語だ。
- Before returning to our main subject, here is a recap of the key points that emerged out of nuclear physics: （後略）
recapitulation （名詞） recapitulate （動詞） を短くしたもので、強勢は、最初の re- にあるが、動詞としては -cap の方に置いてもいいようだ。
私はニュースの最後の方で "Recapping our top story,..." などと使われているのを聞いて、文脈でなんとなく覚えた単語だが、改めて辞書で定義を確かめてみる。
- summary: a summing-up of the main points of something previously put forward
- to restate main points: to go over the main points of something such as an argument or a proposal again
- to repeat the main points of an explanation or description
例文や実例を見ると、名詞の場合、後に続く前置詞には of のほか on も使われている。
- I'll try to recap my points.
- They give a quick recap of the top news stories.
- Could you give me a quick recap on what happened in the meeting?
ちなみに、TVドラマで、それまでのエピソードを再利用してまとめた「総集編（的エピソード）」は recap episode, recap ep というそうだ。 clip show という言い方もするらしい。
- This is just a recap episode.
- It was a pretty decent recap ep.
- This is a recap episode, otherwise known as a clip show.
ついでに、 recapitulation は音楽で「再現部」のことを指す。クラシック音楽でよく使われる「ソナタ形式」は、序奏 introduction のあと、提示部 exposition （２つの主題 primary theme, secondary theme が提示される）―展開部 development （主題がさまざまに変形され、からみあい、対立する）―再現部 recapitulation （再び主題が現れ、対立関係が解消する）と進み、終結部 coda で締めくくられる。
私は音楽の理論はまったくわからないので、以上はもちろんまったくの受け売りだ。そんな私のようなリスナーでも、曲がりなりにもクラシック音楽を聴いているのは、いろいろな作品を聴いているうちに、こうした展開が何となくわかるようになる、つまり、理屈を知らずとも、音の「起承転結」を楽しめるようになるから、というわけである。
脱線したが、recap には、「タイヤを補修して再生する」 to restore (a used tire of a motor vehicle) to usable condition by bonding new rubber onto the worn tread and lateral surface とか「再生タイヤ」 a used automobile tire that has been remolded to give it new treads （tread: タイヤの接地面）という意味もある。

This entry of yours reminds me of an "International Student Conference" held at Kansai University I attended as a delegate of ISA, Nagoya Branch in the summer of 1957. The moderator of our discussion group, a senior at Tenri University often used the expression "to recap" meaning "to sum up/summarize." That's how I learned it. (ISA stands for The International Student Association.)
