juice をめぐる表現さまざま

先日 sex up と似たような表現に juice up があると書いたので、juice をめぐる単語を取り上げてみよう。

まず、日本語で「ジュース」という飲料で juice といえるのは、いわゆる「果汁100パーセント」のもので、それ以外は soft drink などとなるので注意しなくてはいけない。

juice up だが、英英辞典には、enliven: to make something or somebody more lively, exciting, or interesting とか to give life, energy, or spirit to といった説明がある。

例文としては、

- They tried to juice up the party by playing loud music.
- They juiced up the movie by adding some battle scenes.

この表現には、さらに to add more power, energy, or speed to や change something to improve its performance また increase the effectiveness of という意味があり、

- Lowering interest rates is one way to juice up the economy.
- That old jeep's motor got juiced up in the shop,

という例文が辞書にあげられている。

次に名詞の juice をみると、液体のうち生物の「体液、分泌液」として使う場合は通例複数形にする、と書かれている。日本人には感覚的になかなかつかみにくいのではないだろうか。少なくとも私にとってはそうである。しかも、ためしに単数の gastric juice や digestive juice で検索すると多数ヒットするので、よくわからなくなる。

この単語は、「活力、精力、能力」 one’s vitality or creative faculties; a motivating, inspiring, or enabling force or factor として使えるが、これも通例複数形になるという。活力が複数というのも、これまたわかりにくい。

この意味でいくつかの辞書が用例としてあげていたのが creative juices という面白い表現だ。

- Her creative juices were flowing.
- This early in the morning it's hard to get the creative juices flowing (= to start thinking of good ideas).

２つ目の言い換えをみると、日本語の「創造力」というほど大げさではなく、「頭が働かず、いい考えが出てこない」くらいの場合でも使えるということか。

競争心に溢れていれば、competitive juices ということができる。

We like to keep the competitive juices flowing in whatever we do.

日本人が好んで使いそうな「気」は目に見えないが、英語は形がより具体的な「液体」を使うのがちょっと面白い。

juice とは関係ないが、そういえばヒポクラテスの考えを汲む「体液病理学」があった。人間の健康はいくつかの体液のバランスで保たれる、というものだが、改めて調べたら、英語で humoral pathology といい、血液、粘液、黄胆汁、黒胆汁の４種類だった。次はネットにあった Encyclopedia Britannica からの記述である。

Until the latter part of the 18th century, diseases were supposed to be due to an imbalance of the four fluid humours of the body (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile). This was the “humoral pathology,” which dated back to the Greeks.

元に戻って、イディオムで stew in one's own juice は、「自業自得で苦しむ」 to suffer the consequences of one's own actions. ということだそうである。そういえば in a stew とか get into a stew という表現があるのを思い出した。

最後に形容詞の juicy だが、interestingly scandalous; temptingly appealing; attractive because it will bring you a lot of money or satisfaction という意味があるのはうなづける。

- I've got some really juicy gossip for you.
- If sales continue like this, we should be showing a nice juicy profit at the end of the year.

こんにちは。気功や鍼灸でいう「気の流れ」とか「経脈」とかいうのも人間のからだに何か流体が流れているという考えなのでしょうね。四大体液は性格類型に使われていたと思いますが、体液で判断しようというところも四種類というところも現在の血液型性格占いと相似していておもしろいと思います。

COLLINS COBUILD English Dictionary for Advanced Learners says: "A soft drink is a cold drink, non-alcoholic drink such as lemonade or fruit juice, or a fizzy drink." This is just for your info.

以前、腕の痺れがひどくなったことがあり、揉んでもたたいても温めても冷やしてもよくならないので鍼灸師のところにいったら、一発で直りました。やはり現代西洋医学では割り切れないものがあるのでしょうかね。
本文では「気」は見えないと書きましたが、その鍼灸師さんにはちゃんと見えるとのことでした。

Chuck さん、コメントとご指摘ありがとうございました。日本語で「ジュース」という飲み物のうち、果汁がほとんど入っていない炭酸飲料は、英語で juice というのは適切ではないといいたかったのですが、舌足らずで juice と soft drink が別物のような書き方になってしまいました。のちほど書き直そうと思います。
