「鉄ちゃん」は英語で何という？

ある週刊誌の最近の号を眺めていたら、「男の子の『鉄ちゃん脳』は０歳から始まる」という記事があった。これを見て頭に浮かんだ単語が trainspotter である。以前、「おたく」にあたる表現についてネイティブスピーカーと話していて、anorak という類語とともに教えてもらったものだ。

面白いのでその場で覚えてしまったが、意味をしっかり理解していたわけではないので、手持ちあるいはオンラインの辞書を引いてみた。

ついでに trainspotting は

train- という語は含まれているものの、鉄道マニアに限らず使うことができ、 geek や nerd 同様、広く「おたく」的な人物を指すようだ。また、確かに教えてくれたネイティブはイギリス人だった。

「鉄ちゃん」は、語感のせいか多少とも温かさを感じさせる場合もあるのではと個人的に思うが、trainspotter は他の辞書にも often derogatory とか disapproving などとあり、今ふうの日本語でいえば「キモい」ニュアンスを持つようだ。

ネット上の実例は個人のブログが目立ったが、それらは避けて、マスメディアのサイトで見つけたものをいくつか並べてみよう。

- Train-spotters are being told to leave major London stations as rail bosses tighten security amid fears of terrorist.
- ...a hilarious anorak-clad bunch of trainspotters
- ...a man who, four years ago, would have been regarded as a nerdy trainspotter

なお "Trainspotting" という1996年の映画があったが、鉄道おたくではなく、麻薬中毒者のストーリーということだ。

また、「鉄道マニア」の関連で見つけた記述としては、

A railfan or rail buff (American English), railway enthusiast (Australian/British English), or (often with a more specialized meaning, described below) trainspotter (British English), is a person who is typically strongly interested, in an amateur capacity, in railroads.

があった。

私には鉄道趣味はないが、週刊誌のタイトルを見てすぐに trainspotter を連想したのには理由がある。最近、オンラインで注文していた何冊かの本が届いたのだが、そのうちのひとつが "The Cloudspotter's Guide: The Science, History, and Culture of Clouds" だったからだ。

ある方のサイトで紹介されていて知ったもので、子供の頃から雲を眺めるのが好きだったこともあり、面白そうだと注文した。

私は小学生の時、父の古い一眼レフを譲ってもらったが、しばらくはもっぱら雲にレンズを向けていた。

また外国を訪ねると、空や雲の印象が国によって違うように私は感じるが、いかがだろうか。もちろん、周囲に広がる地上の景色によるものだと頭ではわかっているが、それでも頭上を眺めるのは楽しいものだ。

この書名や、初めにあげた辞書の例文から想像するに、 "trainspotter's guide" というのは一種の決まった言い方ではないかと思われる。辞書には出ていないが、検索すると確かにかなりの数がヒットするので、じっくり調べてみれば、何かわかるかもしれない。元になった本でもあるのだろうか。

ついでに、日中ではなく夜間空を見上げる人は stargazer で、astronomer や astrologer を指すが、その他に、こちらは「おたく」ではなく「夢想家」 daydreamer, one whose notions are idealistic and impractical という意味がある。
