つらい時でも silver lining

この silver lining という表現は、苦境の中でも希望を捨てるな、というような意味を持つ Every cloud has a silver lining. ということわざから来ている。最近も、科学ライターの Simon Singh が書いたノンフィクション "Big Bang" を読んでいてお目にかかった。

16世紀の天文学者ティコ・ブラーエが、最先端の観測機器を備えたデンマーク沖の島の天文台をあとにして、プラハに移住するくだりで出てくる。なお、Tycho Brahe は、「ティコ・クレーター」としてその名を月面にとどめているが、英語での発音は /taikou/ となるので注意が必要だ。

The move turned out to have a sliver lining, because it was in Prague that Tycho teamed up with a new assistant, Johannes Kepler, who would arrive in the city a few months later.

英英辞典には、

- an aspect of positive encouragement in an otherwise gloomy or unfortunate circumstance. - something that offers hope or benefit in a situation that is generally adverse

- This metaphoric term is a shortening of "Every cloud has a silver lining," in turn derived from John Milton's Comus (1634): "A sable cloud turns forth its silver lining on the night."

とある。lining は「裏地、裏張り」 a piece of cloth that is used as the inside surface of a garment ということだそうだ。ことわざについて英和辞典は、「すべての雲の裏は銀色に光っている」、つまり「悪いことがあっても、必ず良いこともある」などと説明している。

昔、天気の悪い時飛行機に乗ったことがあるが、ひとたび雲の層を抜けると、そこは蒼い空にまぶしい太陽が輝いていた。当然のことではあるが、何だか感動した記憶がある。

ネットからのクリッピングをもとに、もう少し実例をあげてみよう。最初の文は、去年７月に北朝鮮が行った複数のミサイル発射実験についてである。

- If there's a silver lining to Tuesday's events, some observers argue, it might be the failure of the long-range Taepodong 2 missile.

- George Bush has sometimes claimed that a silver lining to the cloud his forces are struggling through in Iraq is that at least the West's enemies are being fought there rather than at home.

- The situation could get messier yet. So is there any possibility of a silver lining?

元の言い方をもじったものもあった。

Allow us to point out the gray lining in the silver cloud.

また、"Look for the Silver Lining" という歌がある。"When e'er a cloud appears in the blue, remember some where the sun is shining." "So always look for the silver lining, and try to find the sunny side of life." といった歌詞だ。作曲はミュージカルの大家、ジェローム・カーンである。以前 "My Funny Valentine" にからんで紹介したことがある Chet Baker のアルバムでは、ラストを飾る名唱となっている。
