「ヒロシマ」を伝えるアメリカ人

広島にはこれまで何回か行ったことがある。そのたびに平和記念資料館に足を運んだ。「ヒロシマ」の惨禍を今に伝えるこの資料館は、広島市が出資する財団法人広島平和文化センターが運営しているが、この春、その理事長に初めてアメリカ人が就任した。

…ということを私が知ったのは Steven Leeper 氏の就任からだいぶ経ってからだったが、「原爆の日」が近づくにつれ、彼の名前を見ることが増えたので、いくつか関連の英文を読んでみた。その中では、「ロサンゼルス・タイムズ」の記事 "American to recast Hiroshima's message" が読みごたえがあった。

この記事によると、リーパー氏は「単にヒロシマの惨状を訴え、原爆はいけないものだと観念的に繰り返すだけでは不十分」と考えており、新しい方向性を打ち出すことを検討しているようだ。

- He says his mandate from Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba is to find a way to turn Hiroshima's misfortune as the original victim of nuclear war into more than just a sentimental force for peace.

- "Right now, Hiroshima tells you the obvious: that the atomic bomb was a terrible thing, that nuclear war should never happen again, that we should live in a peaceful world. But it doesn't tell you how to accumulate the political power to vote the warmongers out of office, or how we can stop ourselves from killing each other. If we are going to graduate from a war culture to a peace culture, we're going to have to be a little more hardheaded on how we go about it."

具体策のひとつとして、リーパー氏は事業をもっと国際化させる構想を描いている。そうした中で、すでに誤解や反対も生まれているようだ。ある報道をめぐってリーパー氏が誤解があると説明している文章が広島平和文化センターのオフィシャルサイトにある。

これが発表されたのは６月だが、日本版「ウィキペディア」の「広島平和記念資料館」と「広島平和文化センター」の項目では、少なくとも私がこれを書いている今の時点では、氏の説明はいまだに反映されておらず、報道の内容だけが書かれている。

日本語が堪能で、市民団体で平和活動に取り組んだ異色の経歴を持つリーパー氏だが、今後、国際化を図るとなれば、アメリカや中国・韓国などの、異なった意見を持つ人びとと相対していくことになるだろう。

予期される「溝」を氏がどのように埋め、理念をどのように具体化し、広島と世界をつなぐ架け橋をめざすのだろうか、今後も折に触れてネットやニュースなどで確かめていきたいと思う。

もうひとつリーパー氏について読んだ英文記事（邦文記事の英訳と思われる）には、こんな情報があって驚いた。

His father, Dean, was a missionary priest who died when the Toya Maru, a Seikan Line ferry connecting Aomori and Hakodate, was shipwrecked in a typhoon in 1954.

He helped other passengers get into their life jackets and gave up his own life jacket to another passenger. He is believed to be the model of the foreign missionary who appears in a scene depicting the accident in Ayako Miura's novel "Hyoten" (Freezing Point).
