「絶体絶命」の本当の由来は何か (between the devil and the deep blue sea)

このところ sea や deep を含む表現を取り上げてきたが、今回はこうした単語が入っている between the devil and the deep blue sea について書いてみたい。私は、この表現がタイトルになっているジャズのスタンダードナンバーで知った。邦題は「絶体絶命」である。

- between two undesirable alternatives; in an unpleasant dilemma
- faced with two equally objectionable alternatives
- "Between the devil and the deep blue sea" is an idiom meaning you must choose between two undesirable situations (equivalent to "between a rock and a hard place").

と説明されているが、「前門の虎、後門の狼」ならぬ「前門の悪魔、後門の深海」である。どっちへ転んでもこれは大変、確かに絶体絶命だ。ふむふむ…と考える。

ところが、由来を調べてみると、そう簡単にはいかないようだ。

The Dictionary of English Nautical Language によると、

Definition: Faced with a fearful dilemma; from the sailor's dread of the worst duty (hanging from a bosun's chair over the side to paint the seam they called "the devil") and drowning (the deep blue sea).

また、ちょっと長い引用になるが、Wikipedia には、

According to the "International Maritime Dictionary" by Rene de Kerchove, the devil is 1. The seam in a wooden deck which bounds the waterway. It is so called from its difficulty of access in calking (注・caulking の誤りと思われる）. 2. A seam in the planking of a wooden ship on or below the waterline.

If you are up the mast, perhaps standing on a footrope under a yardarm, and are at risk of falling, you will either land on the deck (within the devil plank) or in the water (outside of the devil plank). Either option is likely fatal.

何が危ないのかの説明は異なるようだが、いずれにせよ devil とは船にある継ぎ目 seam のことだという。私も以前、このことを何かで知ったあと、他の人に対し、「この表現の devil は、実は悪魔ではない」と偉そうに薀蓄を傾けたものだった。

ところが（またも「ところが」だが）、話はここで終わらない。今回あらためて調べたら、この定説に疑問を呈する記述が見つかった。

例えば The Phrase Finder というサイトは、このイディオムと、devil がやはり「船の継ぎ目」を意味するといわれている the devil to pay という表現の由来を取り上げている。２つの記事をあわせて読むとわかりやすい。

長文になるので引用はしないが、簡単にいうと、文献に現れる実例を調べると、こうしたイディオムは、船の継ぎ目を指すのに devil が使われるようになる前から存在しており、海とは関係ない内容で使われている。だから、この devil はやはり悪魔を指すと考えられる、というのである。

しかし、と三たび逆接だが、これで一件落着、といえるのだろうか。文献からは、ある表現が初めて記録された年代はわかっても、それが作られた時期を示すとは限らない。devil と deep sea という、関連がなさそうな言葉が結合したのはなぜのなのか。

前回の deep six 同様、真相はもはや闇の中、というより海の中、というべきか。言葉の海はやはり深いようだ。

the devil to pay というイディオムについて補足しておくと、

- trouble to be faced; mischief in the offing
- severe consequences
(例） - There'll be the devil to pay if we're late. - If conditions don't improve, there will be the devil to pay.

英和辞典では、「あとでやっかいなことになるぞ」などと訳されている。

余談だが、スタンダードナンバーの "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" は、主人公が、浮気をしたらしい相手について「あんたなんか嫌い、でも別れられない…困った、どうしよう」と歌う、ちょっとコミカルな曲で（だから「不倫」より「浮気」の方がふさわしそうだ）、邦題の「絶体絶命」はちょっと違う感じである。

CDラックを見たら、この作品を収めたボーカルのアルバムが７枚あった。その中では、Carmen McRae の、ちょっと「崩し」の入った歌唱が印象に残った。After Glow と題されたアルバム全体もいい出来だと思う。
