「お友だち内閣」「仲良しクラブ」～安倍首相にちなむ英語表現

以前、相次いだ閣僚の失言がどう英語に訳されているかを調べて取り上げたことがあった。その際、安倍内閣に対する「仲良しクラブ」という批判の英訳を見つけたので、ついでに書いておいた。その後、類似の表現も目にしたので、そのうちにこちらも調べてまとめてみようかと思っていたら、安倍総理が辞任を表明してしまった。時機を逸してしまったが、せっかくなのでやってみることにした。

以前取り上げた表現は、a close friend, companion という意味の crony だった。cronyism だと the situation in which people in power give jobs to their friends ということになる。その時の英文と、最近読んだ記事にあった例を掲げてみよう。

- Abe came under fire when he took office in September for creating a "crony cabinet" of lawmakers who had supported his bid to become prime minister.

- His previous Cabinet was also criticized as a Cabinet made up of cronies.

- Mr. Abe has been criticized for filling ministerial posts with his cronies when he became prime minister.

- Critics had charged his first cabinet was packed with cronies lacking experience.

「仲間」「友人」を表す pal や chum を使った例もあった。

- The new lineup marks a clear shift from the "Cabinet of pals" who got portfolios when Abe took office last year, analysts said.

- The media ridiculed the administration as a 'cabinet of chums' and speculated that some potential ministers may give Abe the cold shoulder for the next cabinet.

- Discontent lingered Tuesday among some members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party about the way new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe formed his Cabinet, with some calling it a ''chummy'' Cabinet appointed based largely on rewards and of Abe's confidants, party members said.

類語の buddy で表現した例。

- The new lineup is in sharp contrast to the so-called "buddy cabinet" of almost a year ago, made up of Abe's friends and largely first-time ministers.

- The makeup of the new cabinet was in sharp contrast to the previous one, which was derided even by Abe supporters as a "buddy-buddy cabinet" of inexperienced friends and allies.

- "This buddy-buddy government lacks (the will to work for) a great cause and lacks focus," and thus is open to such gaffes, he said.

buddy-buddy は (chiefly derogatory) very friendly と英英辞典にある。ある英和は、「とても仲が良い」とだけ書いているが、別の辞書は、「なれなれしい（奴）」という訳語もあわせて載せていた。先ほどの単語と組み合わせた chum-buddy という俗語も辞書に載っている。

テレビドラマのタイトルを連想する次の表現も、同じような意味で使われているのであろう。

(callow: inexperienced and immature)

また clubby という単語は、friendly and sociable with fellow members of a group or organization but not with outsiders と定義されている。英和辞典を見ると、「社交的な」という訳もあるが、「内輪の」「排他的な」といった否定的なニュアンスでも使えるようだ。

- Out went the close aides in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's widely criticized "clubby" cabinet and in came seasoned "guardian" ministers.

こうした表現は同時進行的には使えなくなってしまったが、英語で安倍政権を振り返るようなことがあれば、いくばくかでも参考にしていただければうれしい。

安倍氏の入院は、さらに何日か続く見通しだと伝えられている。あれほどの圧倒的な支持を得て総裁・総理になりながら、「仲良し」の「お友だち」が去ったあとは孤独そのものだったのだろうか。党内の孤立を武器にし、策を練るのにむしろ孤独を好んだイメージのある―あくまで想像だが―前任の小泉氏とは大きな違いである。

どうせ職を投げ出すのだったら、急に倒れて入院したという演出でもしていたら、まだ同情もひいたかもしれず、後継もすんなり麻生氏で決まっていたかもしれない。自分の保守路線を続けるための戦略としてもあのような辞任会見は不可解である。いや、やはり素人のこんな下世話な考えは通用しないほど、安倍氏の健康はすぐれず、かつ政治の世界はドロドロしたものなのだろう。
