続きは前編で (prequel, reboot)

007の映画「カジノ・ロワイヤル」について先日書いたが、この作品はいわばジェームズ・ボンドの誕生編となっている。ヒット作の続編として、過去を描く作品が制作されることがあるが、そうした場合によく使われる単語が prequel である。

見てのとおり、sequel をもとに pre- をくっつけた造語で、portmanteau のひとつといえると思う。英英辞典の定義は次のようになっている。

- earlier part of story: a movie or novel set at a time preceding the action of an existing work, especially one that has achieved commercial success

- a film, book or play which develops the story of an earlier film, etc. by telling you what happened before the events in the first film, etc: Jean Rhys's novel 'Wide Sargasso Sea' is a prequel to Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre'.

- a literary, dramatic, or filmic work that prefigures a later work, as by portraying the same characters at a younger age

Wikipedia は OED を引用して、1958年にはこの言葉が登場していたと書いている。実際に使用が広まったのは1970年代初めの「ゴッドファーザー・パート２」からだという。

では「カジノ・ロワイヤル」は、007のこれまでの作品の prequel なのだろうか。実は、この単語とならんで、最近目につく単語に reboot がある。コンピューターでつかわれる、あの「リブート」と同じ綴りである。

- Reboot, in serial fiction, means to discard all previous continuity in the series and start anew. Effectively, all previously-known history is declared by the writer to be null and void and the series starts over from the beginning.　（中略）

- The term originates from its use in computer science, whereby rebooting a computer, nothing (except non-volatile storage, such as on a disk drive) of the computer's previous operating session has any bearing on its current session.

つまり reboot は prequel や remake とは違って、キャラクターは共通していても、これまでの作品で描かれた世界や細部の設定をいったんご破算にして、連続性を断ったものを指しているようだ。なお最後の canon という単語については、以前シャーロック・ホームズにからんで書いたことがある。

Wikipedia は reboot のいろいろな作品例をあげているが、その中には「カジノ・ロワイヤル」や、「バットマン ビギンズ」がある。人気シリーズが長期化すると、作る側も手を変え品を変えして新作を世に問うが、そうした新しい行き方を表す新語も考え出されているわけである。
