続・続きは前編で～retcon

前回、シリーズの過去の設定をご破算にして作られる新作をあらわす reboot という単語について書いたが、来年のクリスマスに公開される「スター・トレック」の新作映画についての英文を読んでいたら、関連する retcon という単語があったので、記しておくことにする。

四十年前から、いくつものシリーズが作られてきたテレビ番組・映画の「スター・トレック」については、これまで何回か書いたことがあるが、11作目になる次の映画では、1960年代後半に作られた最初のシリーズのレギュラー登場人物たちを、別の俳優が演じることになっている。

reboot はいいとして、隣の retcon とは、いったい何だろうか。手持ちの辞書には載っていなかったが、オンライン辞書を調べると、数は多くないが、いくつかがこれを収録していた。動詞の意味もある。

- Retcon or Retroactive Continuity is a term for reinventing the history or intentionally changing the understanding of previously stated facts in a work of fiction. It is often done to resolve a discrepancy that was not originally apparent to the writers but may also be a deliberate act to open up new story possibilities. The critical feature of a retcon is that the facts are not changed, only the interpretation of them.

つまり、新しいエピソードで過去の内容に後から肉付けをして、それによって、以前のエピソードが「実はそういうことだったんだ！」と受け取られるようにする仕掛け、といったらいいのだろうか。最後にあげたURLのサイトには、Darth Vader was retconned into Luke Skywalker's father in "The Empire Strikes Back". という「スター・ウォーズ」にからめた動詞の例文があり、日本人にはこれがわかりやすそうだ。

シリーズが抱えている矛盾点を解決する手段として retcon が使われることがあるというが、TVドラマのシリーズは複数の脚本家が加わっているので一貫性に欠ける点が出てくることがあり、これを新たなストーリーによって解決を図るということだろう。

retcon は、シリーズ全体の連続性は一応保つので、それをいったんご破算にする reboot とは違うということになるのだろう。しかし最初の例文には modify continuity, as either a retcon or a reboot とある。これまで培ってきた作品観にこだわりたい人にとっては、統一性を乱すものとも受け取られているのであろうか。いずれにせよ、エンターテインメントの興隆が生んだ、面白い単語だと思う。
