続々・続きは前編で～reimagining, fanon

prequel, reboot, retcon と、ちょっと毛色の変わった「続編」を表す単語を見てきたが、関係する英文を読んでいてさらに目にとまった単語についてメモしておくことにする。いずれも、前回触れた「スター・トレック」の新作に関する記事にあったものだ。

- Orci and Kurtzman also confirmed that the film is not in any way a prequel but a reimagining of the franchise. Whether that means a whole new look for "Trek" remains in question. "We're not going to start totally from scratch," Orci said. "We want it to feel like it's updated and of the now. That's actually the discussions we're having now: how to keep the look of the universe yet have it not look like nothing's new. It's tricky."

- In an interview, Kurtzman and Orci hinted that Star Trek XI would not be a prequel but rather a "reimaging", though true to Gene Roddenberry's original vision.

同じような内容だが、reimagining と reimaging というように単語が異なっている。名前が出てくる２人（この映画の脚本家チーム）が実際に使い分けたのか、あるいは、２人が使った単語はどちらか一方であり、記事の筆者が引用する際に勘違いして他の方にしてしまったのか。

reimagine は辞書に載っているが、reimage はないので前者と間違ったものかとも思ったが、reimaging を使った文章は他にも見つかった。次は、やはり「スター・トレック」の新作、続いて「007 カジノ・ロワイヤル」について書かれたものだ。

- That sounds like a remake to me than a prequel. Star Trek needs to stay away from re-imaging/remake/reboot/ restart territory. I'm okay with a prequel, spin-off, or a sequel but not a remake. There is only room for one universe of the Original Series, Star Trek, or Capt. James T. Kirk but not two.

- It's not technically a prequel it's a reboot. The Bond franchise is starting over again. Bond has been around for 40 years if he started in his 30's then he'd be fighting baddies at 70 years old.　Casino Royale has hit theaters with Daniel Craig taking over the helm as MI6’s top gun, James Bond. image と imagine は語源的に関連があるので、同じような意味を持つのかもしれないが、「新しい続編」について使う場合、何か違いがあるのか、そして、具体的に過去の作品とどう違うのか、演じる俳優が違うほかは設定や連続性のうえでどのくらい過去とつながりがあるのか、など、具体的な意味については今ひとつわからない。reboot や retcon のような、はっきりとした特徴を指すわけではないようにも思える。このへん、詳しい方がおられたら教えていただければうれしい。

ついでにもうひとつ、fanon という造語を見つけたので書きとめておこう。

Fanon, a portmanteau of fan and canon, is a fact or ongoing situation related to a work of fiction that has been used so much by fan writers or among the fandom that it has been established as having happened in the fictional world, but which does not appear in any official work from the original authors, scriptwriters or producers.

えらく長文（悪文?）の定義だが、別のオンライン辞書では、

the body of widely accepted fan-created embellishments of a fictional universe, storyline, or character.

とすっきりしている。つまり、ファンによるある作品の創作が、オリジナル同様に広く受けいれられるようになった状態について使われるようだ。

"Star Trek" などは、テレビや映画とは別に創作小説が大量に出版されていて、本家にない独自のシリーズまで出来てしまっている。これらも spin-off とか offshoot と呼べるのかどうかわからないが、「もっと続きを見たい・読みたい」というファンのエネルギーは凄いものがある。
