「貧乏くじを引く」

先日、福田総理が英語でどう形容されているかについて表現を列挙したが、福田さん絡みの他の英文を読んでいたら、ほぼ１年前に取り上げた単語 straw を使った表現が目に留まったので、短く書いておくことにする。「貧乏くじを引く」を意味するものである。

- More a duty than a pleasure, Yasuo Fukuda, a grey eminence of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), is Japan's new prime minister. He had, he said, “drawn the short straw” to replace Shinzo Abe, who said he intended to resign nearly two weeks ago; Mr Abe has been in hospital since.

日本語の「貧乏くじ」は、英語だと「短いわら」になるわけである。これをさらに英語でどう言い換えることができるのか、英英辞典の説明を確かめてみた。

- to be selected to do an undesirable task (by drawing the shortest straw or otherwise)
I drew the short straw and got stuck doing the whole project alone.

- to be the member of a group who has to do an unpleasant job.
Sorry, Jim, you drew the short straw. You're on toilet-cleaning duty.

- "drawing the short straw," meaning to be randomly, unluckily, or unfairly selected to perform a task or suffer some penalty.

このイディオムは、draw straws という表現から来ているようだ。

- to decide by lottery using straws or strawlike items of different lengths, usually with the short straw or straws determining the person chosen or the loser.

- to decide on something by the chance picking of straws, one of which is significantly longer or shorter than the rest.

- to decide at random; especially by drawing (selecting randomly between) straws, sticks etc. Typically, whoever draws the short straw from among a selection of longer straws must complete some undesirable task
They drew straws to see who had to wash the dishes.

strawlike items とか straws, sticks etc. とあるので、別にわらそのものでなくてもいいのだろうが、こうした表現になっているくらいなので、昔は、くじとしてわらが使われることがよくあったのだろう。その中で一番短い「はずれ」を引くのが draw the short straw となるわけである。

厳密にいえば the shortest straw にはならないのか、と変な疑問も湧いた。イディオムなのであまり考え込んでも仕方ないかもしれない、と思いつつ、 short を shortest に代えて検索してみたら、数はそう多くないもののヒットがあった。まとまったイディオムとして説明しているものもある。

If someone draws the shortest straw, they lose or are chosen to do something unpleasant.
