続・「はまり役」で型にはめられた俳優たち (typecast)

あるキャラクターを演じることによって俳優のイメージが固定されることを指す typecast について続きを書く。

映画「バットマン」 (1989年)は、コミカルなテレビ版とはうってかわって、原作に沿った暗いトーンを打ち出していた。主演のマイケル・キートンは続編に出たが、３作目には出演しなかった。

After appearing in two Batman movies, Michael Keaton decides to pass on the remaining films in the franchise, possibly out of concern about being typecast, or that he'd be upstaged by Jim Carrey.

upstage は、共演者が主演の人気をさらう、いわゆる「主役を食う」ことである。

クリスチャン・ベール主演の最近作「バットマン ビギンズ」は、さらにダークなイメージを前面に出しているが、ここまでくると、私にはあまりに「遊び」がないように思われ、観ていてちょっと息苦しかった。

He (Christian Bale) looks good in the suit and delivers the sort of angry, dangerous performance befitting the character. This isn't the kind of superhero performance that will get him typecast, a la Christopher Reeve or Keaton.

この文章に出てくるクリストファー・リーヴは、「スーパーマン」で一躍有名になったものの、そのイメージからの脱却に苦労し、けがをして闘病の末亡くなったのはご存知の通りだ。

Four Superman films between 1978 and 1987 (and $300m in box-office takings) typecast Christopher Reeve so that he was (in his own words) unable to escape the cape.

escape とかけてあるこの cape は、スーパーマンなどが身に着けているマントのことである。ちなみにアメリカ英語で The Caped Crusader といえばバットマンを指す。The Dark Knight もバットマンのあだ名で、「バットマン ビギンズ」の続編映画のタイトルはこれになるらしい。ちなみにスーパーマンは The Man of Steel と呼ばれる。こうしたサブカルチャー的な情報は、一般の辞書にはなかなか載っていないのではないだろうか。

さて、「スーパーマン」に出演して悲劇に襲われたのはクリストファー・リーブが最初ではない。何となく名前が似ているジョージ・リーブスは、1950年代にこのスーパーヒーローを演じたが、やはり早世することになる。

- George Reeves (1914 - 59), who played 'Superman' in the 1951 film Superman and the Mole Men and the following TV series The Adventures of Superman, suffered from typecasting syndrome and found it difficult to gain other acting work after the TV series ended.

- Regrettably, in 1959, George Reeves was found in his home, dead from a handgun shot. His death was ruled an apparent suicide caused by his depression over being unable to find suitable work because he had been typecast as Superman. However, the circumstances were conflicting, and many believe, to this day, that he was murdered.

最後に、typecast の運命に抗おうという表現を書いて締めることにしよう。

- He seems to be trying to break out of the typecast he was in.

- Eddie Murphy has proved again and again that he is a versatile comedian and "The Nutty Professor" was one of his first successful ventures that helped him break out of the typecast he was cornered into after "48 Hrs." and "Beverly Hills Cop."
