「お株を奪う」

先日 typecast について書いた時にあげた英文の中に、映画「バットマン」にからんで「主役を食う」という意味の upstage という単語が使ったものがあった。ついでなので、類似の表現についてまとめてみることにしよう。

まず、upstage をあらためて英英辞典で引いてみると、これを他の表現で言い換えるにはどうすればいいのか参考になる。

- divert attention or praise from; force out of the spotlight: a vice president who repeatedly tried to upstage the president

- steal the show, draw attention to oneself away from someone else (Example: "When the dog entered the stage, he upstaged the actress.")

- outdo somebody else: to divert attention from somebody else to yourself by being more impressive or noticeable

- outperform or overshadow (someone or something); draw attention from. Example The sensational crime upstaged the election on the evening news.

用例を見ると、人間だけではなく、動物やモノについても使うことができるようだ。

上の定義に outdo とか outperform また outshadow とある。こうした「out+動詞」はカッコいいが、私はなかなかとっさには使えない表現だ。今回の意味では outshine という単語も使えそうだ。

また、２つ目の定義には steal the show が使われているが、ちょっと似たイディオム steal someone's thunder も「出し抜く」という意味である。英英辞典には、upstage を使ってこのイディオムを説明したものもあった。

- to upstage someone; to destroy the effect of what someone does or says by doing or saying the same thing first: “The Republicans stole the Democrats' thunder by including the most popular provisions of the Democratic proposal in their own bill.”

- to ruin or detract from the effect of a performance, remark, etc., by anticipating it - to use for one's own purposes and without the knowledge or permission of the originator the inventions or ideas of another

scene-stealer という名詞もある。an actor who draws attention from or overshadows other actors in the same production, as by charm or quality of performance と定義されている。

次は自分の学習ファイルに書き写してあった例で、Jackie とはジョン・F・ケネディ夫人、Ethel はロバート・ケネディ夫人を指す。

Because Jackie had also proved herself to be a scene-stealer, Ethel didn't know whether to love her or loathe her.
