このところ取り上げている「バットマン」を演じる前にマイケル・キートンが主演した映画に、日米の文化・企業風土の違いと摩擦をユーモアをまじえて描いた「ガン・ホー」 Gung Ho (1986年)がある。

アメリカの自動車業界が不振だった当時、ある街が日本のメーカーを誘致して再興を図ることにしたが…という話である。キートンはアメリカ側の労働者の代表で、異文化との摩擦に戸惑うことになる。日本はバブル期で、「そんな時代もあったな」としか思えない昔の話になってしまった。

gung ho とは very enthusiastic and dedicated: extremely or excessively enthusiastic or eager ということで、work together, cooperate を意味する中国語から入った単語だという。

面白い偶然だが、少し前の The Economist 誌をネットで眺めていたら、この gung ho が使われていた。韓国と北朝鮮の南北首脳会談について報じる記事(Oct. 4, 2007)に出てきたもので、経済支援をする見返りに北から緊張緩和を引き出そうというノ・ムヒョン大統領の政策について、

Mr Roh's approach has led to divisions even among his own advisers. Some, such as the unification minister, Lee Jae-joung -- described by one Western diplomat as an “unguided missile” -- are gung-ho for reconciliation and are prepared to overlook a lot of Mr Kim's unpleasantness. せっかくなので、 gung ho についてあらためて定義や例文をオンライン辞書で確かめてみた。後に来る前置詞は上記の for のほか about もあるようだ。

Online Etymology Dictionary によると、なかなか興味深い由来がある。

1942, slang motto of Carlson's Raiders, (2nd Marine Raider Battalion, under Lt. Col. Evans Carlson, 1896-1947), U.S. guerrilla unit operating in the Pacific in World War II, from Chinese kung ho "work together, cooperate." Widely adopted in Amer.Eng. c.1959.

ということだが、由来となっている中国語とは「工合」で、もともと中国の「工業合作社」（協同組合）のモットーだったのを借用したということだ。

Lieutenant Colonel Evans F. Carlson (1896-1947) borrowed the motto as a moniker for meetings in which problems were discussed and worked out; the motto caught on among his Marines (the famous “Carlson's Raiders”), who began calling themselves the “Gung Ho Battalion.” From there eager individuals began to be referred to as gung ho.

映画「ガン・ホー」は、もう時代の隔たりが大きくなってしまったし、日本人からすると違和感を抱く部分もあるが、それを差し引いても、今見ても面白いだろうと思う映画である。
