「キャンプ」ではない camp

先日、映画「バットマン」で mano a mano という表現を知ったと書いたが、子供の時に見ていた、60年代のコミカルなTVドラマの方の「バットマン」にからんで知ったのが camp という名詞・形容詞・動詞である。野営のキャンプのことではない。

「バットマン」が封切られた時、この映画についての英文を読んでいたら、「今回の作品は camp だったテレビシリーズとはまったく違う」といったことが書かれていた。この camp とは何だろう、と疑問に思った。

その英文はすでに手元にないので、ネットを検索すると、Batman と camp を結びつけた文章がいろいろ見つかる。形容詞の意味では campy ともいう。

英和辞典には、「滑稽なくらいにわざとらしいもの[演技、作品]」「（ユーモア目的で）わざと大げさにした、誇張した」「おかしなほど大げさに演じる」とある。

英英辞典だと、

- providing sophisticated amusement by virtue of having artificially (and vulgarly) mannered or banal or sentimental qualities (Example: "They played up the silliness of their roles for camp effect")

- amusingly brash: deliberately and exaggeratedly brash or vulgar in an amusing, often self-parodying way

- an affected, exaggerated or intentionally tasteless style.

- 1. An affectation or appreciation of manners and tastes commonly thought to be artificial, vulgar, or banal.
2. Banality, vulgarity, or artificiality when deliberately affected or when appreciated for its humor.

確かに、テレビの「バットマン」は、マンガをそのままブラウン管（これも死語になりつつあるか）に移したという感じだった、乱闘シーンでは、殴ったりぶつかったりする時の擬音語がマンガっぽい字で出てきた。あれをじっくりと見れば英語の onomatopoeia のいい勉強になるだろう。悪趣味なまでに滑稽であり、人工的でわざとらしい、ああした味わいを camp というのであろうか。

Wikipedia には、この単語が見出し項目となっており、いろいろ書かれている。

Camp is an aesthetic in which something has appeal because of its bad taste or ironic value.

Camp is derived from the French slang term se camper, which means “to pose in an exaggerated fashion.” The OED gives 1909 as the first citation of camp in print, with the sense of "ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical; effeminate or homosexual; pertaining to or characteristic of homosexuals. （後略）

英和辞典には、camp のもうひとつの意味として、「ホモの」「おかまっぽい」「わざとなよなよと振舞う」などがあげられていたが、これともつながりがあるわけだ。いずれにせよ、ラテン語の campus (field, site for military exercises) まで遡る「キャンプ」の camp とは由来が異なるようである。

Wikipedia には、この単語が知られるようになったのはスーザン・ソンタグ Susan Sontag が書いた "Notes on Camp" という文章がきっかけだったという記述もあった。私は、ソンタグは名前を聞いたことがある程度で詳しくはないが、アメリカの知識人のひとりに数えられる彼女が、この単語に関係が深いとは知らなかった。ソンタグといえば、911テロの直後に、事件を招いた原因はアメリカ自身にあるという内容の文章を書き、物議をかもしたことは今も記憶にある。

いずれにせよこの単語、辞書の定義やネットの実例を見ただけで、そのニュアンスをしっかりとつかめるような生易しいものではないようだ。英語が国際化する一方で、それを母語とする文化と切り離せない単語も厳として存在する、ということであろうか。
