英訳版「沈黙」から拾った表現・その２

遠藤周作の小説の英訳 "Silence" より、目にとまった表現の抜書きを続ける。前回書いたように、今回は英語として面白いというより、原文がどうなっているかという点に興味があったので、それぞれ本文を併記する。

This morning we got word that the guards are getting ready to comb the mountains.

役人たちは人数を集めいよいよ明日山狩りをすると今朝ほど我々は知らされたのです。

comb は「徹底的に捜索する」「くまなく捜す」 search an area thoroughly ということだが、原文の日本語はどうなっているのだろうと思ったら、このように「山狩り」であった。なるほど。

この単語を使って、たとえば comb through thousands of pages of documents とすれば、「書類のすみずみまで目を通す」ということになる。leave no stone unturned という表現も頭に浮かんだが、あらためて確かめると、こちらは「捜す」というより、「あらゆる手段を尽くす」 try every possible course of action in order to achieve something という意味で使われるようだ。

'What I say is simple. You and those like you are only looking at the externals of missionary work. You're not considering the kernel.'

「私の言うことは簡単だ。お前たちはな、布教の表面だけを見て、その質を考えてはおらぬ」

kernel は「核心」 the central of most important part of something ということだが、原文は「質」であった。意味を取ったものか、それとも「本質」と捉えたものか。

Ferreira stood there motionless, his head hanging down like an old animal. The interpreter, true to type, put his head down to the barely opened door and for a long time peered in at the scene.

年とった獣のようにフェレイラはうずくまったまま身動きもしない。通辞は通辞で閂のきつく差しこんである戸に耳をあてて中の様子を長い間、窺っている。

true to type (または true to form)は「典型的な」と英和辞典に書かれている。一方、英語の辞書には

- being or behaving as expected
- if someone does something true to form, they behave in the bad way that you would expect them to. True to form, she turned up an hour later than we'd arranged.

などと説明されている。「典型的な」という日本語の訳で考えると、「通辞は通辞で」とはちょっと違うようにも感じるが、英語によるこの表現の説明と原文と比べると、それほどおかしくもないように思えてくるのが不思議だ。
