続・devil にちなんだ表現 (devil's advocate など)

前回は old-fashioned という注のある表現が多かったが、それに比べれば (play) devil's advocate は現役といえるだろう。「カトリックの列聖調査審問検事」という意味が最初に出てきてめんくらう辞書もあったが、今は「議論で故意に反対の立場を取る人」や「へそまがり、天の邪鬼」の方を先にしている辞書がほとんどのはずだ。

- to pretend to be against an idea or plan which a lot of people support in order to make people discuss it in more detail and think about it more carefully
- In an argument or discussion, a devil's advocate is a person who supports an unpopular or opposite argument in order to make people think seriously about the matter.

I know that most people here support the project, but let me play devil's advocate for a moment and ask if anyone has considered the cost.
I don't think he was really in favour of getting rid of the scheme, he was just playing devil's advocate.

日本では伝統的に、議論であえて大勢に異を唱えると、それこそ「へそまがり」と見なされてきたと思うが、考えを深めるのには有効な手段だろうから、取り入れるのはいいことだと思う。

ただ、devil's advocate を演じさえすれば議論に積極的に関わっていることになるとカン違いされるのは困る。競技ディベートの経験者などに、そうした立場を取るのが自己目的化しているような人が時折りいるようである。議論を何らかの建設的な方向に持っていくのでなければ、またその人なりの考えを提示してもらうのでなければ、単なる言葉の遊び・議論の弄びで終わってしまうだろう。

いきなり脱線したが、難しい問題の解決には、それこそ議論を尽くさなければ、あとあと「やっかいなことになる」。そこで the devil to pay という表現を思い出したが、これはやはり devil を含む between the devil and the deep blue sea 「絶体絶命」とあわせて以前取り上げているので、参照いただければ幸いである。

また、the devil's in the details という表現もある。's は is であろう。

- the details of a matter are its most problematic aspect.

- When the hard part of what you are trying to do is in the many small details, you can say "the devil is in the details." Example: "I thought I would be able to write that article in two hours, but it ended up taking me five. The devil was in the details."
The devil is known for always make life difficult for man in many small ways. Example: "I can sketch a basic outline of the plan for you and it may look very simple, but the devil is in the details."

これに似た、「神は細部に宿る」という言葉があるが、ネットで調べたら "God is in the details." も確かにあり、由来にはいくつか説があったが、もともと英語ではなく、英語表現として定着しているとはいえないようだ。英語では、細部に宿るのは神ではなく、やっかいなものらしい。

次に、面白いのが give the devil his due である。「気に入らない人でもいいところは認める」ということで、嫌な奴にも取り柄はある、ということか。

- to give deserved credit even to a person one dislikes:
- said when you admit that someone you do not like or admire does have particular good qualities

I don't like the man but - give the devil his due - he works incredibly hard.
To give the devil his due, you must admit that she is an excellent psychologist.

ところで due には meeting all the necessary requirements and thus proper and appropriate to the situation とか suitable to or expected in the circumstances という形容詞の意味があるが、実例を見るたびに、自分には使えないなとため息をつく単語のひとつである。
