まだある悪魔 fiend、および goblin とogre

「神」にからむ表現からの連想で始めた「悪魔」についての単語の芋づる式整理も、もういいかげん疲れてきたが、これを最後にと、さらに思いついたものを書くことにしたい。

fiend という単語は、最初見たときは friend の間違いかと思ったくらいだが、正反対の邪悪な存在なので、かえって覚えやすいかもしれない。

- an evil spirit or demon.
- an evil supernatural being, especially a devil from hell

ここから転じて、人についてネガティブな意味に使われるのも、これまであげた「悪魔」がらみの単語と同じだ。

- a diabolically cruel or wicked person.
- a cruel wicked and inhuman person [syn: monster]
He was portrayed in the media as a complete fiend.

- (Informal) a person who is extremely addicted to some pernicious habit:
an opium fiend; a dope fiend

しかし一方で、もう少し軽い意味でも使われることがあるようだ。先日あげた devil と日本語の「仕事の鬼」と同じような意味もある。

- (U.S.) troublemaker: a mischievous or annoying person, especially a child
Those little fiends ate all the cake!

- (Informal) one who is completely absorbed in or obsessed with a given job or pastime:
a crossword-puzzle fiend.
- an enthusiast or devotee:
an exercise fiend
- someone who likes something very much or is very interested in something:
a chocolate fiend
McCormack is a fiend for punctuality.

語源を見ると、ゲルマン系の言葉らしい。

Old English feond "hated person, enemy" (hence "the enemy of everyone," the devil) < feogan "to hate" < Germanic]

先に、friend と一見似ていると書いたが、Online Etymology Dictionary には次のような記述があった。

As spelling suggests, it was originally the opposite of friend, but the word began to be used in O.E. for "Satan" (as the "enemy of mankind"), which shifted its sense to "diabolical person" (c.1220). (以下略）

とはいえ、friend とこの fiend が語源的に直接結びつくということなのかはよくわからなかった。もっと調べれば、何かわかるのかもしれないが。ちなみに friend or fiend でネットを検索すると、ヒットはあるにはあったが、おなじみの friend or foe という言い回しには比すべくもなかった。

悪魔というより、「小鬼」などという訳もあるのが goblin である。

- a mischievous, ugly, dwarf-like creature of folklore.

- ORIGIN Old French gobelin, possibly related to German Kobold (denoting a spirit who haunts houses or lives underground) or to Greek kobalos ‘mischievous goblin’.

最後にもうひとつ、ogre という単語をあげてみよう。こちらはややユーモラスさも漂う fiend に比べて、前回の ghoul に似て、ひたすらおぞましい感じだ。日本の「鬼」を表す場合にしばしば使われているのを見かけるが、これだとあくまで邪悪なものとしての鬼を表すことになりそうな気がする。

- a monster in fairy tales and popular legend, usually represented as a hideous giant who feeds on human flesh.

- INFORMAL a fierce and frightening person:
The headmaster at my junior school was a real ogre.
- a cruel wicked and inhuman person
- a person who is felt to be particularly cruel, brutish, or hideous.

- ETYMOLOGY: French, probably ultimately from Latin Orcus, god of the underworld.

それにしてはこう並べると、なかなか凄い形容詞が揃っているものだ。

ちなみに、「鬼ごっこ」は play tag といい、「鬼」は it というそうだが、遊び方・ルールも日本と同じなのだろうか。
