czar
1555, from Rus. tsar, from Old Slavic tsesari, from Gothic kaisar, from Gk. kaisar, from L. Caesar. First adopted by Russian emperor Ivan IV, 1547.

tsar
1670, the more correct Latinization of Rus. czar, from prehistoric Slavic *tsesar, from a Gmc. source, ultimately from L. Caesar.

- Koizumi's economic czar, Heizo Takenaka

- Koizumi and his financial czar, an academic economist and political outsider named Heizo Takenaka

- the former counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke

- U.S. anti-drug czar John Walters

- The current director is John P. Walters; his position is ubiquitously nicknamed the Drug Czar.

- The White House wants to appoint a high-powered czar to oversee the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with authority to issue directions to the Pentagon, the State Department and other agencies, but it has had trouble finding anyone able and willing to take the job, according to people close to the situation.

- And yet even after Madrid, Europe has been slow to respond. The office of the European terrorist czar, created after 3/11, has just three employees. "Often we need attacks to get serious," says Stefano Dambruoso, Italy's top antiterrorism magistrate until last year.

- (informal) a person who has been given special powers by the government to deal with a particular matter

- an appointed official having special powers to regulate or supervise an activity:
a racetrack czar; an energy czar.

- a person having great power; an autocrat:
the square-jawed, ruddy complacency of Jack Farrell, the czar of the Fifteenth Street police station” (Ernest Hemingway)

- a powerful person in business or politics:
a group of publishing tsars
Microsoft czar Bill Gates
