pick up the slack

何回か耳にしたので覚えた表現である。会話でよく使われるものなのかもしれない。いくつかの意味があるので使い出もありそうだ。先日読んで紹介したペーパーバック "Gravity" で印をつけたところを見返していたら、次のように使われていたので取りあげてみたい。

Every day aboard ISS (= International Space Station) was tightly scheduled, with little time to spare for reflection or grief. If one crew member was incapacitated, the others had to pick up the slack, or experiments went untended.

slack は「ゆるい」「だらっとした」 loose; having or showing laziness or negligence; slow or sluggish という形容詞のほか、「たるみ」「ゆとり」「凪（無風状態）」「不振」といった名詞の意味もある。それを pick up するとはどういうことだろうか。

手持ちの辞書を引くと、pick up を使うのは主にアメリカ英語で、take up でもいいとある。意味としては、

- （ロープの）たるみを取る、ぴんと張る (on, in)
- （組織などの）たるみを直す、刷新する
- （不振の企業に）活を入れる
- （やり残しの）仕上げをする

- pull on the loose end or part of a rope in order to make it taut
- improve the use of resources to avoid an undesirable lull in business

と書かれている。

しかし、実際に使われた例に触れていると、こうした訳語や定義ではしっくりこない場合もある。

例えば、

- With our best player injured, other players have to pick up the slack.

- ...As a result, Iraqi reporters have taken up the slack, going into dangerous situations and reporting back to their home bureaus.
（イラクでは治安が極度に悪いため、外国メディアは実際にはイラク人記者を現場に送っているという実態を紹介する記事の一節）

つまり、「やり残しを仕上げる」のは中断した本人ではなく、代わりの人がやる、ということのようなのだ。

オンライン辞書の説明を見てみよう。

- (American & Australian, informal) to do the work which someone else has stopped doing, but which still needs to be done
When Sue starts going out to work each day, Bob and the kids will have to take up the slack and help more at home.

- If you pick up/take up the slack, you improve a situation by doing something that someone else has not done or not completed:
With our best player injured, other players have to pick up the slack.

英英辞典や英和辞典の中には、新しいものでもこの意味を載せていない辞書がある。例外的な意味とは思われず（上の "Gravity" もそうだが、私が接した例では実はこれが多いと感じている）、ちょっと不思議である。

さて、このほか slack を使った表現として、give [cut] （人） some slack が辞書に載っていた。

- （人）に息抜きをさせる、ゆったりさせる
- allow (someone) some leeway in conduct

- Give me some slack.
（あまり細かいことをいうな）

もうひとつ、slacker は「なまけもの」「責任を回避する人」「兵役忌避者」。また「社会に無気力・無関心な高学歴の若者」という意味もあり、特にアメリカで90年代の若者を指すのに使われたと辞書に書かれている。
