arguable とは反対の arguably

英語に接する時は、文脈やこれまで学んだ知識から意味を類推する。そうしなければ多読などできない。しかし、それだと単語や表現によっては思わぬ誤解をしかねない場合があるのは、これまで何回か実例を取り上げた通りである。やはり地道な学習も必要なのだ。先日読んだ記事に arguably が出てきたが、これもやけどをする単語かもしれない。

その実例とは、次のようなものである。アフガニスタン情勢にからむものだ。

Helmand, center of opium and Taliban, is arguably the most unstable region of the country at present.

仮に arguable という単語を知らなくても、argue という動詞から、「議論できる」、そして「議論の余地がある」ではないか、と想像がつく（これは正解である）。それが副詞になっているのだから、「議論の余地があって」というようなことだろう。そう考える人がいるかもしれない。

ところが、こう考えると間違いになる。

英和辞典には、次のようにある。

arguable
1. 議論の余地ある、疑わしい　2. 論証できる、論拠のある、主張しうる

arguably
（文修飾）ほぼ間違いなく、おそらく

「疑わしい」と「ほぼ間違いなく、おそらく」である。形容詞と副詞は正反対、とは言い過ぎかもしれないが、ちょっと意外だ、と思う人もいるのではないだろうか。

英語による説明はどうなっているかと英英辞典を見ると、残念ながら、非ネイティブにはわかりにくいと思われる定義を載せているものもある。例えば、

as is able to be supported by argument.
He is arguably the best pianist alive today.

形容詞の説明のあとに、例文のみを載せているものもある。

arguable
possible to give reasons for and against; debatable
It's arguable that another route would be just as bad.

arguably
She was, arguably, the best female basketball player of all time.

もっとわかりやすく、すっきりしているのは、次のようなものだろう。

arguable
If something is arguable, there could be some disagreement about it:
It is arguable which way is quicker.

arguably
possibly:
He is arguably the world's best football player.
Arguably, the drug should not have been made available before it had been thoroughly tested.

なお often used before a comparative or superlative adjective という注をつけている辞書もある。上記の実例・例文もほとんどが最上級と使われている。

この arguably、実際には、話の筋道や文脈を追っていれば arguable から想像する意味とは違って「何かヘンだな」とひっかかることがあるはずだ。私も、明らかにそれではおかしいと思われる例に出会ったおかげでこの意味を知った。しかし一方で、文脈からはわかりづらい場合もあるだろうし、速読をめざすあまり読み飛ばしてしまうかもしれないので、今回取り上げた次第である。

ついでだが、オンライン辞書の Encarta は arguably を定義したあとに debatable との使い分けを載せていた。

possibly: used to mean that a statement is open to dispute but could be defended in an argument
This is arguably the best restaurant in town.

Word Usage arguably or debatably?

Arguably, the most common of the two words, suggests that the speaker assumes widespread but not universal agreement with what is being said: arguably the most influential legislator in the country. Debatably is more neutral: It was a debatably rude thing to do.
