not to be sneeze at と Bless you

少しでも語彙を増やしたり定着させたりするために私が採っている方法のひとつが「連想」である。ある表現をめぐって自分なりに連想を働かせると、そこから新しい単語に出会い、忘れていた言い回しに再会することがある。先日「くしゃみ」に関連して Gesundheit! について書いたので、連想というほどではないが、温故知新と sneeze を辞書で引いてみた。

この単語は「くしゃみをする」の他に、sneeze at で「～をばかにする」「軽視する」、not to be sneezed at [nothing to sneeze at] とすれば、「ばかにならない」という意味になる。英英辞典を見ると、

- (informal) to treat with contempt; scorn:
$50,000 is nothing to sneeze at.

- to treat as unimportant:
These deficits are nothing to sneeze at.

- to make light of
the cost was nothing to sneeze at

- not to be sneezed at
(informal) not to be rejected without careful consideration.

Online Etymology Dictionary には、

to sneeze at "to regard as of little value" (usually with negative) is attested from 1806.

とあるので、それほど古いものではなさそうだ。しかし、どうしてこの意味や表現ができたのかについては書かれていない。

他の辞書も見たが説明は見つからなかった。しかし、くしゃみをした時に "(God ) bless you." と声をかけることが何かの鍵にならないだろうか、と思った。

そこで Wikipedia で Bless you の項目を見ると、この習慣の起こりは謎に包まれているということだ。いくつかの説が載っていたが、このうち、くしゃみが病気を蔓延させるという考えや、くしゃみによって悪霊が外に出るという見方は、異なった説とはいえ似通ったところがある。こうしたあたりを以下引用する。

-... At the time, sneezing was thought to be an early symptom of the plague. The blessing ("God bless you!") became a common effort to halt the disease. （中略）

- Another version says that people used to believe that your soul can be thrown from your body when you sneeze, that sneezing otherwise opened your body to invasion by the Devil or evil spirits, or that sneezing was your body's effort to force out an invading evil spirit. Thus, "bless you" or "God bless you" is used as a sort of shield against evil.

で、元に戻ると、sneeze at するとは、病気にせよ悪霊にせよ望ましくないものを他人に投げつけることだから、転じて「軽んじる」になったのではないか、そんな風にも想像した。もちろん根拠はないし、Bless you. の由来が全然違うものだったら苦しくなる。

ところが、さらにネットを見たら、sneeze at の起源そのものについて一説を紹介しているものがあった。長いので詳しくは

をご覧いただきたいが、私の想像と違うのはいいとしても、個人的にはどうもストンと落ちない内容である。最後のところを引用すると、

You indulged in it (=sneezing) whenever you wanted to show your disapproval of anything said or, even more so, your lack of interest in the matter discussed. A sneeze was an unmistakable way of saying politely ‘you bore me.' Consequently and logically, anything ‘not to be sneezed at' was something really worthwhile.”

ということだそうで、これだと「あくび」の受け取り方にも近いようで不思議な感じがする。ちなみにあくびが退屈を表すのは英語とて同じで、名詞の yawn には something or someone that is very boring という意味がある。
