snuff film (movie)

先日書いたように、sn- で始まる単語には鼻に関係ある単語が多いが、そのひとつが snuff である。「くんくん鼻で嗅ぐ（こと）」という意味だが、名詞としてのこの単語に movie あるいは film をつけると（映画好きならご存知の方がいるはずだが）、とんでもない(?)意味のスラングになる。

英英辞典の定義を列挙しよう。

- a film that purports to, or does show the actual death of one of its subjects

- A snuff film, or snuff movie, depicts the actual killing of a human being - a human sacrifice (without the aid of special effects or other trickery) perpetrated for the medium of film for the purpose of entertainment and distribution.

- (Slang) a pornographic film that shows an actual murder of one of the performers, as at the end of a sadistic act.
[Origin: 1970-75]

- a movie in a purported genre of explicit pornography culminating in the actual violent death of a participant in a sex act.

- pornographic movie with alleged murder: a pornographic movie or video that allegedly ends with the murder of one of the participants in a sex act ( slang )

日本では、こうした映画は思いもよらなかったのか、そのまま「スナフ・フィルム」とか「スナフ・ムービー」と呼ばれることが多いと思う。

私は単に「実際の殺人を撮った映画」を指すと覚えていたが、上記のようにセックスと関連づけた定義がいくつかあるのを見ると、かつては関係があった（あるいは今もある）ということなのだろう。

また、最初にあげた定義は purports to という言い方をしている。「実際にはどうかわからないが」という筆者の見方を滲ませたものか。

snuff には、「（ろうそくなどの）芯を切る」「（ろうそくなどを）消す」「～を終わらせる」、さらに「～を殺す」という意味がある。snuff movie もこうしたところから来ているのだろう。

さらに辞書は、上記の意味の snuff には late Middle English; of unknown origin とある一方、「鼻をくんくんさせる」の方の snuff には from Middle Dutch snuffen 'to snuffle' と説明している。つまり綴りこそ同じだが、由来は異なるらしい。冒頭のような言い方は（自分で書いておいて何だが）厳密には不正確といったほうがよさそうだ。

ところで私が学生の時に観たメル・ギブソンの出世作「マッドマックス」はアクション映画で snuff movie ではないが、撮影中にスタントマンが死亡し、そのシーンをそのまま使っているとして話題になった。ところがその後、スタントマンが死んだというのは宣伝のためのウソだったという話も出た。どちらが本当なのだろうか。
