トレンドを占う bellwether

今年のアメリカ大統領選挙戦は、この国に特別な関心を持っているわけではない人にも、アメリカが統合よりも分散へ向かっていると感じさせるものではないかと思う。有力候補者の顔ぶれは、民主党が性差と人種について、共和党が保守の度合いについて、それぞれ選択を迫る。そして今回のスーパーチューズデーで明確な勝者はおらず、人びとの拡散ぶりを印象づけるものとなったのではないだろうか。

「天王山」にはならなかった火曜日決戦については、ネットでいろいろな記事が読めると思うが、International Herald Tribune に掲載されていた "Who won Super Tuesday?" という op-ed コラムから、bellwether という単語について書いてみよう。

先に余談を書くと、最初の文にある she とはクリントン、he はオバマのことである。前者が獲得代議員数でまさり、後者が勝った州の数でまさったことを、中学生レベルの単語で簡潔に表現しているのは、やはりまねできないと舌を巻く（もちろん文脈は必要だが）。

で、bellwether だが、英和辞典には、

１．群れを先導する鈴をつけた羊
２. 先導者、主導者
３．動向や風潮を表す人・もの

といった説明が載っている。ちなみに wether は「去勢した雄羊」とのことだという。

私がこの単語を知ったのは、以前やはりアメリカの選挙についての記事を読んでいてだったが、その後も個人的には、選挙関係の文章で一番お目にかかるように思う。

英英辞典では、２や３の定義として、

- a person or thing that assumes the leadership or forefront, as of a profession or industry

- one that serves as a leader or as a leading indicator of future trends

- something that shows what the general future of changes or developments will probably be

- something, especially company or stock, that people consider to be a sign of how an economic situation is changing

などと書かれている。選挙について使われる場合は、日本語風に言えば、「選挙全体の行方を占える選挙区」「有権者の風向きを読める選挙区」という感じだろうか。

最初にあげた記事の文章ではミズーリ州を bellwether と形容していた。その理由は、以下にあげる実例のひとつに書かれている。

- The county is considered a bellwether district for statewide races.

- Paris is a bellwether of the fashion industry.

- California is a trendsetter and a bellwether state.

- Illinois is a "bellwether" state for communications policy development, and often leads nationally in new policy formulation issues.

- ...Missouri, a bellwether state that almost exactly mirrors the demographic, economic and political makeup of the nation,...
