「ボルトとナット」のもうひとつの意味 (nuts and bolts)

前回あげた bricks and mortar からの連想したのが nuts and bolts という表現である。この「ボルトとナット」も、やはり比喩的な意味で使われる。

英和辞典を見ると、（物事の）「基本」「要点」「ポイント」「いろは」といった訳がある。定冠詞をつけて使われるのは、やはり唯一無二の重要なものだからか。

いつものように、英英辞典がどう説明しているかを見てみよう。

- 1 : the working parts or elements 2 : the practical workings of a machine or enterprise as opposed to theoretical considerations or speculative possibilities

- the essential or basic aspects:
to learn the nuts and bolts of a new job

- the basic, practical details of a job or other activity.
Law school teaches wonderful theory but it doesn't teach the nuts and bolts of actually practising law. (often + of)

nuts-and-bolts とすると形容詞で、「基本的な」「実践的な」ということになる。

続いて、英文記事にあった実例である。

- The draft "lays out an entire roadmap until the end of the year" for the North's nuclear disarmament, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill told reporters before boarding a plane for New York. "We're into the nuts and bolts now of implementing de-nuclearization," Hill said.

- But Mr Rove also had a rare combination of command of the nuts-and-bolts of politics (he had the best mailing list in Texas) and a sharp eye for his opponent's vulnerabilities.

私事で恐縮ですが、私は「ただ今豪州でＴＩＡの診断を受け、病床」友人は腰の骨を折り、orthopaedic surgery にかかり入院中・・・そこで、というのも辺ですが、すこし医療関係のentry をお願いできませんか？

natto9さん、お見舞い申し上げます。私は海外で入院したことはありませんが、かなり大きな切り傷を負って病院で縫合してもらったこと、また突然高熱と胃痛に襲われて十分な説明のないまま注射と投薬を受けたことがあります。どちらもあまり衛生状態のよくない途上国で、言葉もあまり通じず不安でした。
医療関係は私は不案内なので、お役に立つことができません。どうもすみません。
