The Picture of Dorian Gray (Penguin Classics)
Oscar Wilde

The Picture of Dorian Gray
But beauty, real beauty, ends where an intellectual expression begins. Intellect is in itself a mode of exaggeration, and destroys the harmony of any face.
- Art only begins where imitation ends.
(Oscar Wilde)
- Man begins where nature ends.
(Thomas Hardy)
- Music begins where words end.
(Goethe)
- Happiness begins where selfishness ends.
(John Wooden)
- Philosophy begins where religion ends, just as by analogy chemistry begins where alchemy runs out, and astronomy takes the place of astrology.

The Picture of Dorian Gray
- The only difference between a caprice and a lifelong passion is that the caprice lasts a little longer.
- When one is in love, one always begins by deceiving one's self, and one always ends by deceiving others. That is what the world calls a romance.
- Whenever a man does a thoroughly stupid thing, it is always from the noblest motives.
- When we are happy, we are always good, but when we are good, we are not always happy."
- People say sometimes that beauty is only superficial. That may be so, but at least it is not so superficial as thought is. To me, beauty is the wonder of wonders. It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.
冒頭にあげた "Real beauty ends where an intellectual expression begins."
