six-pack 「6缶パック」「割れた腹筋」

少し前に読んだペーパーバック "Gravity" で目にとまった表現について断続的に書いているが、今回は six-pack を紹介したい。主人公の医師が、休暇に入る前の最後の仕事を終えて病室から出る場面である。

First stop, he decided as he stepped off on the lobby level, would be the corner grocery store for a six-pack. An ice-cold beer and an afternoon loading up the sailboat was what he needed right now.

この six-pack だが、ビール６本をセットにしたものだろうと文脈からも想像がつく。

辞書の定義である。

- unit of six cans or bottles: six cans or bottles, usually of beer, sold together in a pack - carton containing six bottles or cans
- a container of six bottles or cans, usu. of beer or a carbonated beverage.
- a pack of six cans of beer or soft drinks typically held together with a plastic fastner

最後の定義は私が使っている電子辞書にあるオックスフォードのものだが、これだけが held together with a plastic fastner と具体的に書いている。最近は見かけなくなってきたものの、紙のケースではダメなのか、と思ってしまう。

さて、辞書を見ると、この six-pack には他にも面白い意味がある。

- strong and evident abdominal muscles
- HUMOROUS the well-developed muscles of a man's stomach
- a set of well-developed abdominal muscles
[as adj.] six-pack abs

つまり、筋がはっきり分かれて見える、ボディビルダーのような腹筋を指すのだろう。一方で、英和辞典には俗語として「出っ張った腹」という意味もあった。これは皮肉なのか、あるいは six-pack のビールからさらに beer belly と連想したものなのだろうか。なお abs は腹筋 (abdominal muscles) のことである。

six-pack については、さらに関連の表現が辞書に書かれていたが、これについては次回書くことにしたい。
