- Slang. the average or typical blue-collar man

- a lower-middle-class or blue-collar male
Etymology: from average 'Joe' watching TV with a six-pack of beer
Usage: derogatory slang

- a name for a hypothetical ordinary working man
Joe Sixpack doesn't care about that.
[Because such a man supposedly buys six-packs of beer]

- a man or boy in a legal proceeding whose identity is either not known or not revealed

- Law, chiefly N. Amer. an anonymous party in a legal action

- an average man affected by everyday events ( informal )

- N. Amer. informal a name used to represent a person in a hypothetical situation

- the average or typical U.S. citizen:
an entertainment aimed at Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Public.
[Origin: 1935-40, Americanism]

- Informal. a person's signature:
Put your John Hancock on this check.
[Origin: 1840-50, Americanism; named after John Hancock, from the boldness and legibility of his signature]

- Named for John Hancock, the first person to sign the United States Declaration of Independence. According to legend, he signed his name largely and clearly to be sure King George III could read it, causing his name to become an eponym for "signature". However, other examples show that Hancock always wrote his signature this way.

(mostly UK) a personification of the general public, or of an average ordinary person Note: Bloggs is actually a very rare surname.

anyone, especially people that you do not know or do not think are important.
Draw the curtains or we'll have every Tom, Dick and Harry peering through the window.
I want a qualified plumber to do the job, not just any Tom, Dick or Harry.

子守男さま、お久しぶりです。ドラマ(私の好きなミステリ系)でJohn Doeとよく聞いてたので、「身元不明者」とは思いましたが、死体のことだと思ってました。(^_^;

six packの方は、アメリカ人の友だちが「I used to have a six pack.」
