「空（くう）」の thin air

医療サスペンス小説 "Gravity" に、次のように thin air という言い回しが出てくる。日本語としては、「虚空」とか「何もないところ」というように考えた方がしっくり来そうである。

Jack gave a laugh and slumped back against his seat. Neither one of them spoke for a moment. The day had already wearied about both, and they still had the flight back to Houston. "I feel like I'm punching at thin air," said Jack, pressing his hand to his eyes. "I don't know who or what I'm fighting. But I can't afford to stop fighting."

もうひとつは "The Meaning of Everything" (Simon Winchester) という本からの例。シェイクスピアは豊かな語彙を駆使したが、彼の時代には今あるような辞書は存在しなかった、ということを書いているくだりである。詳しいことはわからないが、ここでは定冠詞がついている。

We have already seen how frequently and flamboyantly Shakespeare contributed words to the language（中略）; but to do so he had, essentially, either to find such words in other writings, note down words or expressions that he heard in conversation, or else invent or conjure words out of the thin air.

辞書をみると、この thin air について、次のような記述があり、まとまった言い回しであることがわかる。non-existent や nowhere、nothing という意味なのに、希薄ではあっても空気という実体ある言葉が使われているのがちょっと面白い。

- thin air
used to refer to the state of being invisible or non-existent
She just vanished into thin air
They seemed to pluck members out of thin air.

- out of thin air
from nowhere or nothing, as if by magic
虚空から、何もないところから、どこからともなく、突然

- He came up with an elaborate plan almost out of thin air.
凝った計画をひょいと持ち出した

- vanish [disappear, melt] into thin air
to disappear suddenly in a mysterious way
跡形もなく消える、完全に見えなくなる[手が届かなくなる]（否定文にはならない）
